The 2015 Nepal earthquake left a trail of death and destruction, as shown in the Netflix documentary “Aftershock: Everest And The Nepal Earthquake.” The documentary series aims to highlight how hundreds of individuals have lost their possessions, livelihoods and loved ones to the wrath of nature through interviews with locals, visitors and mountaineers. Honestly, it was really hard not to cry after seeing what the survivors went through in the movie.

Dave Hahn, an accomplished mountaineer and expedition guide, was in Nepal when the earthquakes hit. The earthquake caused massive landslides, making the natural disaster even more disastrous for Everest climbers. However, Dave kept his cool and found a way to be saved. Dave Hahn: Who Is He?

Dave was born on November 3, 1961, in Okinawa, Japan, but his family later moved to the US, and he spent his formative years in California, New York, and New Mexico. Interestingly, Dave’s first preference was not to become a mountain guide or expedition leader; instead, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from the State University of New York at Buffalo. But after graduation, his father led him on an adventure to the top of Mount Rainier, which introduced him to the allure of the mountains. Dave met various guides and leaders on the trip who helped him find his passion, and by the end of it, he was eager to fulfill his purpose. He began his career as a ski patroller in 1985 after receiving the necessary credentials, and was driven to excel in his line of work.

Dave eventually advanced to the position of guide, and his background allowed him to advance to the position of expedition leader. Additionally, he has worked for many businesses throughout his career, with notable examples including Fathom Expeditions, Angel Fire, Taos Ski Valley, and Rainier Mountaineering. Coincidentally, Dave was at Everest base camp in 2015 when the Nepal earthquake hit. The seasoned mountaineer later said that despite many disasters in his profession, the death and destruction caused in Nepal was unimaginable. Since he is at base camp, he also has to escape while navigating avalanches and watching as people around him fall to their deaths. However, Dave’s knowledge and good fortune eventually guide him away from danger, allowing him to escape the jaws of death.

Dave Hahn: Where Is He Now?

Currently, Dave is a renowned mountaineer and expedition leader who has made a record-breaking 15 summit ascents of Everest out of a total of 21 attempts, making him the only American to do so. He also led expeditions to Everest and South Georgia in addition to making numerous trips to the peaks of the Vinson Massif and Denali. Readers may also be surprised to learn that the knowledgeable guide wrote for Outside Magazine and was a member of the Mallory and Irvine Expedition that found the missing body of George Mallory.

Dave, now 60 years old, continues to lead expeditions and is as passionate about mountaineering today as he was when he first started. However, according to insiders, Dave refused to guide any further climbs on Mount Everest following the tragedy in Nepal. Despite this, he appears to be living in Taos and working as a ski patroller. According to accounts, Dave oversees the training of a new generation of mountain guides.
