Expedition leader Dave Hahn: Where is he now?

The 2015 Nepal earthquake left death and devastation in its wake, as shown in the Netflix documentary Aftershock: Everest And The Nepal Earthquake. Through interviews with locals, visitors and mountaineers, the documentary series aims to reveal how hundreds of people have lost their belongings, livelihoods and loved ones to the wrath of nature. Honestly, it’s really hard not to cry after seeing what the survivors went through in the film.

Dave Hahn, an accomplished mountaineer and expedition leader, was in Nepal when the earthquakes struck. The earthquake caused enormous landslides, making the natural disaster even more devastating for Everest climbers. Still, Dave was able to keep his composure and find a way to safety. Dave Hahn: Who is he?

Dave was born on November 3, 1961 in Okinawa, Japan, but his family later immigrated to the United States and he spent his formative years in California, New York and New Mexico. Interestingly, Dave didn’t initially want to be a mountain guide or expedition leader; Instead, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in history from the State University of New York at Buffalo. But after graduating, his father took him on an adventure to the top of Mount Rainier that introduced him to the allure of mountains. Dave met various guides and leaders along the journey who helped him find his passion and by the end he was eager to achieve his goal. He began his career as a slope patrol officer in 1985 after obtaining the necessary credentials and he was keen to excel at his job.

Dave eventually rose to the position of guide and his background allowed him to rise to the position of expedition leader. In addition, he has worked for a number of companies throughout his career, including notable examples such as Fathom Expeditions, Angel Fire, Taos Ski Valley and Rainier Mountaineering. Coincidentally, Dave was at Everest Base Camp in 2015 when the earthquake struck Nepal. The veteran mountaineer later remarked that despite numerous disasters in his profession, the death and destruction caused in Nepal was simply unimaginable. Being at base camp, he too was forced to flee while navigating avalanches and watching those around him fall to their deaths. However, Dave’s knowledge and luck eventually led him away from danger and allowed him to escape the jaws of death.

Dave Hahn: Where is he now?

Currently, Dave is a renowned mountaineer and expedition leader who has completed a record-breaking 15 summit ascents of Everest in a total of 21 attempts, making him the only American to do so. He also led expeditions to Everest and South Georgia, and made numerous trips to the peaks of Vinson Massif and Denali. Readers may also be shocked to learn that the knowledgeable guide wrote for Outside Magazine and was a member of the Mallory and Irvine Expedition that found George Mallory’s missing body.

Dave, now in his 60s, continues to lead expeditions and is as passionate about mountaineering today as he was when he began his career. However, according to insiders, Dave has declined to lead any more climbs of Mount Everest after the tragedy in Nepal. Despite this, he seems to live in Taos and works as a ski patrolman. Dave has reportedly overseen the training of a new generation of mountain guides. To say the least, Dave’s extraordinary life is incredibly inspiring and we wish him all the best in the years to come.
