In December of the same year, police received a tip that the man may have been seen in the city of Calgary. The person who called said they had seen someone who looked like Mackenzie, but when they looked inside they found it was a dead end. The strange case has not yet yielded any new information, but police are still treating it as an open investigation. Mackenzie’s family, especially her father, think she was taken from them. Paul and Gina asked their two younger daughters, Sadie and Laurenne, if they’d heard from their sister. They hadn’t talked to her, so they said they hadn’t heard from her either. Paul looked around north Idylwyld Drive, where Mackenzie would have been dropped off after leaving Trent Crescent. He found nothing that would have told him where his daughter was.

In February 2021, police released a photo of a man they want to talk to about Mackenzie’s disappearance, along with security footage of him from late December when he was in the 1400 to 1600 block of North Idylwyld Drive. Even though they think he knows something about the case, they haven’t said much more.

In the same month, Mackenzie’s name and photo appeared on 34 digital billboards across Canada. Every billboard asks people to call the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or Crime Stoppers if they have any information.

In May 2021, Mackenzie’s family said they would pay $20,000 for information leading to her return. The family, their friends, the arts community in Saskatoon and organizations from across Canada all helped raise the money. Since Paul has been involved in art (he paints landscapes and runs a small art shop in town), the art community as a whole has been very involved in the search.

Mackenzie’s family and the police are concerned that she is in a dangerous condition because she has not been on social media in a while. She is known for going out of the house for a long time, but she has always kept in touch with her family.

Investigators with the Major Crimes Division of the Saskatoon Police Service are following the leads, but they say they aren’t getting much information that could help them find Mackenzie. The family is still working with the police, Crime Stoppers and the RCMP to find her.

Trottier said he and his wife Gina were concerned when Mackenzie didn’t show up for Christmas and stopped using her phone.

“This isn’t like her at all,” he said, so they knew something was wrong.

The Trottiers spoke to Mackenzie’s two younger sisters and her group of friends to find out if she had contacted them, as she had in the past when she was away for a few days.

Paul searched all over North Idylwyld Drive where Mackenzie had been dropped off, but couldn’t find her. He called the police to report her missing.

Since then, he said, his life has been strange.

Trottier tries to run his art business amid a pandemic. He said the day-to-day tasks of running the store are a distraction, except when people come in to offer help or support.

He is also known as a painter of landscapes. He said painting in the store’s basement studio had given him some relief, but only to a degree.

“When you paint it’s easy to get lost in what you’re doing because you have to stop everything else and pay attention to what you’re doing in front of you. So it’s kind of disconnected, and although times are shorter now, at least I have that time.”

On Wednesday, the Saskatoon Police Department released a photo of a man they want to talk to about Mackenzie, but they don’t know who he is.

They also showed surveillance footage of the person.

Julie Clark, a police spokeswoman, said in an email that the video was taken in the 1400-1600 block of Idylwyld Drive North in late December.

“At this point in the study, we can’t say why researchers think this person knows anything about the case.”

“It has been over 50 days and it still hurts every day. Every day is a pain in the heart,” he said.
