Harry Styles, Olivia Wilde refers to “toxic negativity” over romance
Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde are finally addressing the “toxic negativity” that some fans are targeting their online relationship.
The singer, 28, admitted that hateful comments about his 38-year-old partner “obviously” didn’t make him “feel good” in his September Rolling Stone cover story.
“Obviously, it’s hard to feel that being close to me means you’re on a ransom on Twitter or something like that,” explained the former One Direction member.
“I just wanted to sing,” he added. “I didn’t want to get into it if I wanted to hurt people like that.”
Wilde also gave an interview for the track, calling most of the Styles fans “deeply loving people” and “true masters of kindness”.
“What I don’t understand about the cruelty you’re referring to is that this kind of toxic negativity is the antithesis of Harry and everything he puts there,” said the actress.
“Personally, I don’t believe that hateful energy defines his fans at all.”
The couple made their romance public in January 2021. They had met a year earlier while working on Don’t Worry Darling, which will be released on September 23.
The couple were private about their relationship, and Styles noted on Monday that he was “not choosing a public relationship” by going out with Wilde – just as the duo did on Thursday in New York.
The X Factor graduate also defended himself against allegations of queerbaiting on Monday, saying, “Sometimes people say, ‘You’ve only been in public with women,’ and I don’t think I’m going to be with anyone in public.”
Although Styles rarely talks about his affair with Wild, he deals with their collaboration. In May, he complimented the director of Booksmart in an interview with Howard Stern.
“I had a great experience directed Olivia,” said the Grammy winner of his upcoming film with Florence Pugh. “Sometimes acting is very uncomfortable. … It takes a lot of trust if you want to give your best.
“I think being able to trust a director is a gift, so it was very helpful,” he continued.
As for Wilde, the graduate of “OC” said Vogue in December 2021 that she was “tempted to correct the false narrative” when asked about her affair.
“When you’re really happy, it doesn’t matter what strangers think of you,” she said then. “All that matters to you is what is real, what you love and who you love.”
Alum “Dom” was previously engaged to Jason Sudeikis in 2013-2020, and the ex-couple has a son Otis, 8 years old, and a daughter Daisy, 5 years old.
Wilde and her ex-fiancé are currently struggling to care for the little ones.
