Harvey Fierstein wants Harry Styles to star in “Kinky Boots”
Harvey wants Harry.
Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein – whom the show “Kinky Boots” is currently running off Broadway – believes that Harry Styles would be perfect for the long-discussed film adaptation of the musical.
“I think Harry Styles would be great,” marveled winner Tony in a recent Page Six interview.
The musical – based on an English movie – tells the story of Charlie, the owner of a shoe factory, who fights to save the family business. Unexpectedly, he is rescued by Lola, a wonderful entertainer who encourages Charlie to make shoes for women in larger sizes.
The “Hairspray” star also knows who he would like to see alongside the singer of “As It Was”.
“I was also thinking about Bruno Mars for Lola,” he said. “I mean, he has theatricality and stuff.”
Aside from wanting to work on a potential film, 70-year-old Fierstein shows no signs of slowing down.
Earlier this year, he released his memoirs, “I Was Better Last Night,” and also wrote a revised book for “Funny Girl.” But “Mrs. Star Doubtfire” is cautious when the subject of Beanie Feldstein comes up.
Earlier this summer, Feldstein dramatically announced her early departure from Broadway.
The Booksmart star – which received mixed reviews for her performance – revealed on social media that she was leaving because producers decided to “take the show in a different direction.”
It was announced shortly thereafter that Lea Michele would star in Fanny Brice.
“I think we put ourselves there as actors,” said Fierstein. “There is no armor around us, there is really no one to protect us.”
“I don’t know if she did right or wrong (announcing her early departure on Instagram),” he continued.
“And I think it’s hard to judge. I wrote to her many times during her run, you know, texted her, sometimes she replied, sometimes not. But I hope with all my heart that she will be fine in the long run. “
