Hilary Duff pays tribute to the former Aaron Carter after his death
Hilary Duff wrote a touching tribute to her ex-boyfriend Aaron Carter after his death Saturday.
“For Aaron – I’m so sorry that your life was so hard for you and that you had to fight in front of the world,” wrote 35-year-old graduate Lizzie McGuire on Instagram.
“You had a charm that was absolutely sparkling … boy, did my teenage me love you very much.”
Duff ended his message by telling Carter to “rest easy” and “send love” to his bereaved family.
The former couple started dating in 2000 when they were both 13 years old. They stayed together for three years, eventually breaking up for good after the infamous Lindsay Lohan love triangle.
“I just got a little bored so I went and started getting to know Lindsay by dating Lindsay,” Carter admitted on CNBC’s “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch” in 2005, adding that Duff “really broke her heart,” which he felt I’m sorry.
After the “younger” star grew up and started a family many years later, the singer of “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It)” continued to regret the way he treated her.
“I will spend the rest of my life trying to improve, get back to her,” he wrote in a deleted tweet in 2014. “I don’t care what EVERY one of you thinks.”
Duff responded to her ex’s public declarations of love later that same year, I say BuzzFeed“He’s still doing it. I don’t know how I feel. I mean, it was so long ago. … [We] we don’t know each other [anymore]”.
Carter finally surpassed his feelings for the “How I Met Your Father” star. He got engaged to Melanie Martin in 2020, and in 2021 they welcomed a son named Prince.
But the former child star – the younger brother of Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter – struggled with addiction and family trauma in the final years of his life.
He was found dead Saturday morning in a bathtub at his home in California at the age of 34.
“Aaron worked very hard towards the end of his life to recover, to be a good father and make amends to his family,” said his representative Page Six.
The cause of death has not yet been established.
