House of the Dragon: Where was it filmed? House of the Dragon cast, actors, verified reviews.
Created by George RR Martin and Ryan J. Condal and serving as a prequel to the widely acclaimed Game of Thrones series, HBO’s House of the Dragon is derived from the books titled A Song of Ice and Fire . and the novel entitled Fire & Blood, both written by George RR Martin. The action begins almost two centuries before the events of the original program and tells the epic story of House Targaryen, including their rise to power and subsequent decline. It narrates all of the events leading up to the War of the Targaryen Succession, also known as the Dance of the Dragons, and connects various storylines from the first program to this one.

The story uses a number of recurring motifs and components such as dragons, which will no doubt make audiences reminisce while encouraging them to anticipate and enjoy each new episode. Additionally, there are a number of familiar locations that you might recognize from the series, leading you to speculate as to whether or not the production crew used the same locations as in Game of Thrones. Filming of House of the Dragon took place in numerous locations in Spain, England, Portugal and Croatia including Extremadura, Catalonia, Andaluka, Cornwall, Derbyshire, Hertfordshire, Hampshire and Surrey as well as the district of Castelo Branco in Portugal , Dubrovnik and the State of California in the United States. In April 2021, principal photography for the first part of the series began. In July 2021, production was suspended for a period of two days due to a positive COVID-19 case involving members of the cast and crew. In February 2022, filming appeared to be fully wrapped. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s take a look at all of the different locations featured in the HBO series!
Extremadura, Spain
Extremadura is an autonomous community in Spain that serves as the setting for many important sequences in the movie House of the Dragon. More specifically, the production crew will set up camp in and around Cáceres. In fact, they were spotted filming various sequences for the October 2021 premiere season at Trujillo Alcazaba. The filming location address is Pl. del Castillo, 1, 10200 Trujillo. Casterly Rock, the ancestral stronghold of House Lannister, is represented here by the castle.
Also Arco de la Estrella on C. Arco de la Estrella and the Cathedral of Santa María on Pl. Sta. María, 3 serve as the main filming locations for the series. In addition, numerous images are taken of the exterior of buildings throughout the city, particularly in Plaza de San Jorge, Plaza San Mateo, Calle Amargura, Cuesta de Aldana and Calle Adarve de Santa Ana.
Various regions throughout Spain
A small number of episodes of the series were filmed in Lloret de Mar, located in Catalonia on the Mediterranean coast. Castillo de La Calahorra is located in the city of La Calahorra in the province of Granada and the people involved in the production of House of the Dragon are rumored to be using the castle’s facilities. Due to its rich history and impressive architecture, the castle is an excellent choice to serve as a backdrop for the series.
The English county of Cornwall
The cast and crew of House of the Dragon even set up camp in Cornwall, a ceremonial and historically significant county in south-west England, to film scenes. In fact, during the early stages of production of the first season, the production crew was spotted filming around Mount’s Bay, including Kynance Cove, and Holywell Bay in Newquay. These locations are in Cornwall. Additionally, the tidal island of St. Michael’s Mount in Mount’s Bay plays the role of Driftmark, the ancestral seat of House Velaryon in the series. Driftmark is located in Mount’s Bay.
The English county of Derbyshire
Also, the prequel production team is traveling to Derbyshire, a county in the East Midlands of England, to record some key sequences for the show. The settlement of Castleton, the Peak District, Cave Dale, Eldon Hill, and possibly Heanor Marketplace are some of the locations you can spot in the background in several of the series’ scenes.
Other locations within the UK
Hertfordshire is a ceremonial county in southern England and serves as the setting for several key episodes in the film House of the Dragon. In particular, the cast and crew utilize the resources available at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden (formerly known as Leavesden Film Studios). The show’s scenes will be shot on a state-of-the-art technological facility called the V Stage, a brand new virtual production stage specifically designed for use with the show. The film studio on Warner Drive in Leavesden, Watford houses 19 stages of various sizes and two of the largest tanks in Europe. As a result, it fulfills all the criteria that any type of production can set.
Additionally, the Iron Age hill fort Caesar’s Camp features prominently as a filming location for the series. In southern England, the fort is in the region bordering the counties of Surrey and Hampshire. It is conceivable that the production of the first season was influenced by Surrey, a county in south-east England, as the county served as the setting for a significant tournament scene.
District of Castelo Branco, Portugal
The district of Castelo Branco, located in central Portugal, is also the location for filming other segments of House of the Dragon. In late October 2021, the production team was observed recording several key sequences for the first season at Monsanto’s Castle, located in the Monsanto neighborhood at R. do Castelo 32. Also, the Castle of Penha Garcia, which can be seen in the town of Penha Garcia at Largo da Igreja 1, is another notable production location used in the series.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Reports indicate that the Croatian city of Dubrovnik is a very regular feature in House of the Dragon. It is widely regarded as one of the most popular tourist attractions in the entire Mediterranean, and its location in the Dalmatia region contributes to this reputation. The Rector’s Palace, Church of St. Savior, Church of St. Blaise and Dubrovnik Bell Tower are four of the city’s most notable landmarks, each holding a significant place in the city’s history.
Los Angeles, California
Some scenes from the first season of House of the Dragon were filmed in Los Angeles, a major city in Southern California. The city served as the filming location for these scenes. Apparently they took advantage of the varied topography of the city and shot the necessary shots in front of the right backdrops. Over the years, the City of Angels has served as the backdrop for the filming of a variety of films and television shows, including Whiplash, Black Widow, and Gaslit.
