I was sexually harassed by the producer of “Fresh Off the Boat”
Fresh Off the Boat graduate Constance Wu claims in her upcoming memoirs that she was sexually harassed by an elder on the production team of the now defunct ABC sitcom.
According New York Timesthe actress, 40, refers to the staff only with an initial in “Making the Scene”.
Wu also claims that during the show’s inaugural season in 2015, the man displayed controlling behaviors such as “asking her to run all her business affairs next to him and telling her what to wear,” according to the Times.
“Fresh Off the Boat was my first TV show,” Wu said. “I was thrown into this world. I have no parents in the business. And since I was 30, people thought I knew what I was doing. It made me paranoid and embarrassed. “
The star – who played the matriarch Jessica Huang on the show – says things took a physical turn when she and the producer attended a sporting event together. There he allegedly “put his hand on her thigh, his hand finally brushed her crotch,” reports the Times.
Wu claims she asked him to stop and the two later swept the alleged incident under the rug.
During a panel at Friday’s Atlantic Festival in Washington, Wu detailed her decision to comment on the alleged misconduct.
“I kept my mouth shut for a very long time about the sexual harassment and bullying I received during the first two seasons of the show. Because after the first two seasons it was once a success, once I was not afraid of losing my job, then I could start saying “no” to harassment, “no” to bullying, from this particular producer “, she said, for a change.
“And that’s why I thought,” You know what? I did it, no one needs to know, I don’t have to stain the reputation of this Asian-American producer, I don’t have to stain the reputation of the show. “
Fresh Off the Boat ended its six-season run in February 2020.
ABC did not immediately respond to Page Six’s requests for comment and declined to comment on the NYT. When he reached for the comment, Wu’s representative did not comment on the allegation, but suggested that we take the book.
Wu wrote her book during an extended break from public opinion. She took a three-year hiatus from social media after being tweeted that she was “so upset” and “literally crying” about the 2019 revival of Fresh Off the Boat.
She even tried to commit suicide before a friend stepped in to save her life.
“Luckily a friend found me and took me to the ER. It was a terrifying moment that forced me to reevaluate my life, ”the Hustlers star explained in a Twitter post in July. “For the next few years, I put my career aside to focus on mental health. AsAms doesn’t talk enough about mental health. “
Wu added that her upcoming memories are “not always the most flattering portrayal” of herself. But it’s “as honest as I know how to be,” she noted.
“Because the truth is, I’m not composed, graceful, or perfect. I am emotional. I make mistakes … many of them! ” she finished. “After a short break from Hollywood and lots of therapies, I feel well enough to come back here (at least for a while). And although I am afraid I have decided that I owe it to me from 3 years ago to be brave and share my story to help someone with theirs.
Wu had previously stated that her negative reaction to the renewal of “FOTB” came because it meant she had to “give up on another project that really fascinated me.” She further explained the intentions behind her tweet in an August 2019 interview Los Angeles Timescalling himself “dramatic”.
