Inheritance, a 2020 thriller directed by Vaughn Stein, centers on the Monroes, a powerful political family that rules New York City. The entire state of Alabama, primarily Birmingham and Mobile, was used to film Inheritance. Principal photography on the film, starring Lily Collins, began in late February 2019 and appeared to wrap up in early April of the same year. In 2008, Archer Monroe, the head of a prominent and wealthy political family in New York City, died far too young. His younger son William, a candidate for re-election, his older daughter Lauren, the Manhattan District Attorney, and his wife Catherine each receive a portion of his estate. Harold Thewlis, a family attorney, secretly shows Lauren her late father’s video message to her. He claims in the video that he will tell her a secret that she must keep until she dies. He leads them to the underground bunker of the family estate. There she discovers Morgan Warner, a prisoner who claims to have been held captive for 30 years.

Morgan claims that he was Archer’s friend and business partner up until the night they killed someone while driving drunk. They covered up the murder at Archer’s urging so Morgan would not expose it before Archer locked him up. In the intervening years, Archer revealed numerous secrets and treated Morgan like a father confessor. Morgan shows Lauren the location of the burial of the pedestrian’s body as evidence. In addition to finding Archer’s longtime lover, with whom he had a child, Lauren follows Morgan’s footsteps and uncovers evidence that Archer used bribes to help his children win elections to public office. Finally convinced to release Morgan, Lauren instructs Harold to open an offshore bank account and hire a private plane for Morgan’s escape after realizing he was injured.

Lauren collected a sample of Morgan’s fingerprints as he fell asleep and sent them off for analysis. Paperwork will be submitted to the Monroe residence after fingerprints have been matched. When Catherine opens the file, she is horrified to see images of Morgan, whom she refers to as “Carson” and calls him a “bad man”. Lauren learns that Harold was killed and that Morgan’s plane never took off. When Lauren arrives back at the Monroe residence, Morgan has already kidnapped Catherine and taken her to the bunker. Lauren is subdued by Carson, who then admits he drugged and raped Catherine thirty years ago. When they collided with the pedestrian, Archer was on his way to kill Carson; Also, Carson was the one who killed Archer by ingesting the poison Archer wanted to use on him. As they fight, Lauren fights back and Carson claims to be Lauren’s biological father before Catherine grabs his gun and kills him. Together, Lauren and Catherine fill the bunker with gasoline and burn it on fire, removing all traces of Carson’s captivity.

In November 2018, it was announced that Simon Pegg and Kate Mara had joined the cast of the film, which will be directed by Vaughn Stein from a screenplay by Matthew Kennedy. The film is being produced by Richard B. Lewis, David Wulf, Dan Reardon and Santosh Govindaraju under their separate production companies Southpaw Entertainment, WulfPak Productions and Convergent Media. Connie Nielsen, Chace Crawford and Patrick Warburton joined the film’s cast between January and March 2019, while Lily Collins replaced Mara. Marque Richardson joined the cast of the film in April 2019.

On April 20, 2020, the Tribeca Film Festival was set to host its international debut. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the festival to be postponed. The film’s distribution rights were acquired by Vertical Entertainment and DirecTV Cinema, which is scheduled for release May 22, 2020.
