The character of Miranda Bailey, played by Chandra Wilson, has had one of the most important story arcs since the very first episode of the medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy to air on ABC. Bailey, who worked at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital first as a resident of general surgery and now as chief of surgery, is the person responsible for keeping the hospital running smoothly despite the many challenges it faces. Because of Bailey’s resilience in the face of challenges and his willingness to “do what’s right,” the hospital is now recognized as one of the nation’s premier medical facilities.

However, in the final episode of the show’s eighteenth season, Bailey shocks fans of the character and the show by announcing that she is leaving Gray Sloan. Will Bailey be restored to her former position as Chief of Surgery when the show’s twentieth season begins and a new era in the hospital’s history begins? Will Wilson leave the show after almost seventeen and a half years? Let’s find out! SPOILERS AHEAD.

Will Bailey return to Gray Sloan?

Bailey and Richard Webber form an alliance towards the end of season eighteen to save the residency program at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital. Despite best efforts, Jamarah Blake has decided to temporarily suspend the program. Bailey is also stunned to learn that Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman used drugs from their hospital to euthanize war veterans in the name of compassionate care. The fact that Meredith Gray made the decision to move to Minnesota makes her even more angry. Bailey begins to realize that she doesn’t have to make the ultimate sacrifice of her life for Gray Sloan to continue. In the final episode of the eighteenth season, she hands Meredith the key to her office and announces her resignation from her position as Chief of Surgery.

However, given that Bailey has worked her entire life in Gray Sloan’s many operating rooms, closets, and hallways, it’s pretty unlikely she’ll ever choose to leave the hospital permanently. It’s more likely that her decision to resign was an impulsive response to the increasing pressure being placed on her than a conscious decision she made after careful consideration. It’s likely that a confluence of factors, including Richard’s sabbatical, Owen and Teddy’s misdeeds, Jamarah’s unfavorable judgment, Meredith’s plans to leave the hospital, and the blood shortage, contributed to Bailey’s desire for a period of rest and relaxation. While Bailey still thinks so, that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s severed all ties with Gray Sloan for good.

In the nineteenth season premiere, Bailey goes back to the hospital as a “visitor” to meet the new patients. The fact that she’s returned indicates that she can’t fully break away from Gray Sloan, and her homecoming could also be an indication that she’s starting to miss working at the hospital, a large part of whose reputation is based on it is due to the sacrifices she made. Since Bailey’s position will also be filled by Meredith on an interim basis, one can assume that nobody at Gray Sloan has reconciled the fact that Bailey will no longer work there permanently.

If Meredith and Richard manage to resolve the issues that led to Bailey’s resignation, such as the termination of the residential program, Owen’s illegal practices, etc., then we have reason to hope that she will return to the hospital in a relatively short time, to resume her position as Chief Physician.

Is Chandra Wilson leaving Grey’s Anatomy?

Absolutely not! Chandra Wilson isn’t leaving Grey’s Anatomy anytime soon, at least not in the near future. A few days before the start of the nineteenth season, it was announced that Wilson would be a permanent member of the show as a regular cast member throughout the season. As a result, it’s safe to assume that Bailey’s appearance in the season 19 pilot won’t be the very last time we see her on the show. Wilson has made it very clear over the years that she intends to be a part of the series until it ends. According to an interview Wilson gave to Variety in December 2020, he said, “I always say ’til the wheels fall off, I’ll be there.

At this time, there is no indication from either Wilson’s side or ABC’s camp that the actress has changed her mind. “They keep calling me and I keep showing up because they keep telling me we’re doing another one!” It’s all story driven as always, but what a great story to be able to tell that I was a starter and a finisher, that’s a very cool story,” Wilson added to Variety. “I’d love to see the end of her, I’d love to see the completion of that arc, not just as a character but with the show,” Wilson said.

Given the current state of affairs, it’s most likely that Bailey’s departure from Gray Sloan isn’t an indicator of her alleged departure from the hospital, but rather a piece of narrative intended to act as a cliffhanger in the season 18 finale. Given the above considerations, we think Chandra Wilson will keep her recurring role on Grey’s Anatomy.
