A young boy named David Martinez lives in Night City and is enrolled at Arasaka Academy there. Unlike his classmates, David is not wealthy and shares a house with his mother, who only works as a family doctor.

David is a model student who earns only A’s but is socially isolated from the other students in his class. With the help of his close pal Ripperdoc, he takes shortcuts when it comes to his cyber implants. His mother wants him to put his education first and work his way up the Arasaka company as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, on one particular day, David and his mother are caught in the crossfire of a shootout from a passing car, leaving his mother in critical condition. She is sent to a mediocre doctor because that is the only option available, but she doesn’t make it through the treatment.

David discovers Arasaka’s Sandevistan implant, which is a military-grade cybernetic device, while searching through her possessions. He recently witnessed a soldier go through cyberpsychosis while using it, and an elite squad from Max Tac was eventually able to take him out.

Despite having no experience working with this type of technology, he makes the decision to ask the Ripperdoc to implant him with the Sandevistan. After receiving the technology, he goes to the school his bully is enrolled in and severely beats him up.

While riding the train, he encounters Lucy, another person with implants. She takes note of his technology and successfully persuades him to work with her. Before collapsing under the strain, David uses his boosted powers to help her acquire some implant chips to make a quick buck.

He is taken to the Ripperdoc, who prescribes some immune blockers and tells him to limit his intake of Sandevistan to no more than two or three times a day. He then travels back home with Lucy, where the two talk about the goals they’ve set for themselves. She reveals to him that one of her goals is to travel to the moon, which is a well-known place for vacationers.

David is accused of taking technology intended for him by one of the Edgerunners who ambushed him along with a group of other individuals with cybernetic implants. David explains to them that it belonged to his mother, who passed away not long ago. The current leader of the Edgerunner pack, Maine, claims his mother bought the Sandevistan for him.

David suggests that he and his friends join their team and pay off the debt so he can pursue his dream of becoming an edge runner. They agree that he can join them and that they will send him on a mission to protect the navigational data of Mr. Tanaka’s limousine. Tanaka is a high-ranking Arasaka manager.

Lucy, Dorio, Kiwi, Pilar and Rebecca are some of the members of the crew led by Maine. They strive to carry out the task in secret; however, things get out of hand and they are forced to improvise. After a lengthy pursuit, David finally manages to get the limousine to its destination.

After that, he gets to know the other members of the team and begins to understand what it means to be an edge runner. In addition, he develops a romantic relationship with Lucy. One day while they are partying, Pilar is murdered by a random person whose illness causes them to act irrationally, and David and the others then kill the killer.

David and the rest of the crew devised a plan to capture Tanaka himself, but as they worked to retrieve the information from Tanaka’s head, Maine experienced a cyberpsychotic breakdown, rendering Kiwi inoperable. Because Lucy is a netrunner – a person who breaks into a computer network to retrieve information – she is forced to take action.

Despite being shaken by her discovery, Maine loses her composure outdoors and kills Dorio, as well as a large number of Max Tac’s cops and agents. David and Lucy make it out alive, but the ordeal leaves them both traumatized.

Over time, David gains muscle and has a significant amount of additional technology implanted. He does jobs with the support of Kiwi, Rebecca and Falco who is his main driver. Lucy is David’s roommate, but despite his repeated invitations, she never works with him or his colleagues.

David finds out that Lucy grew up as an Arasaka operator, willing to scour the ancient web for ancient information before she could evade capture by the corporation and go into hiding. David is recruited by a fixer named Faraday for a job that originally gave them the Tanaka job.

Faraday has worked as a fixer for the Militech business in the past, but Arasaka decides to hire him for a specific job. Lucy eliminated the netrunners trying to steal the date stolen from Arasaka by Tanaka, but Arasaka was successful in reclaiming the date stolen from Tanaka.

Arasaka has been working on developing a cyberskeleton, and he believes David is the best person to test it due to his experience working with high-end implants. Lucy has feelings for David, so she is determined that Arasaka will not get his hands on him.

As Faraday and Kiwi work together against Lucy, she is tricked into falling into their trap. They put him in a position where he has no choice but to implant himself with the cyberskeleton by luring David and his team towards a convoy transporting the cyberskeleton.

David learns that Faraday and Kiwi betrayed them and that they currently possess Lucy. He then devises a plan to get Lucy back with the help of Rebecca and Falco.

What exactly is Arasaka looking for?

Because Arasaka makes their living selling military-grade implants, they demanded that their latest technology be tested in the field. Militech, one of their main competitors, found out about the cyberskeleton and convinced Faraday to hire Maine’s team to get more information about it and try to gain an advantage over Arasaka.

Lucy discovered David’s file in Tanaka’s mind and learned that they wanted David to be the one testing them in the field because of his ability to administer the Sandevistan without experiencing significant adverse effects. Lucy also discovered that they wanted David to be the one testing it in the field.

In accordance with Faraday’s plan, they wanted David to eliminate the Militech Strike Team with the cyberskeleton and then have it collected himself, but David proved too strong for them to pull off.

Adam Smasher was the person who was supposed to inherit the Arasaka cyberskeleton, but when David implants himself and loses control, Arasaka hires Adam Smasher to remove David’s cyberskeleton. Adam Smasher was the person who would inherit the Arasaka cyberskeleton.

Will David save Lucy in the end?

David begins to experience the symptoms of cyberpsychosis and is also running low on the immune blockers he needs to treat it. He can overcome the obstacles and with the help of Falco and Rebecca reach the top of Arasaka Tower where he meets Adam Smasher.

The two powerhouses square off, but not before David saves Lucy and orders Falco to get her as far away as possible first. David can keep up with Adam for a while, but in the end he’s no match for the experienced fighter who ends up killing him.

Will Lucy be able to realize her ambitions?

In order to save Rebecca and Lucy and their reward for the job, Falco manages to escape from Arasaka Tower. In addition, David, through a message he leaves Falco, conveys to Lucy his regret at not being able to personally accompany her on her journey to the moon.

Lucy eventually makes it to the moon, and while there she is able to witness its magnificence firsthand while also reflecting on David and the importance he had in her life.
