At the age of 19, Schofield moved with his family to New Zealand, where he made his television debut on February 23, 1982, as the lead host of the youth music program Shazam!
He also worked for the Radio Hauraki station in Auckland for two years.

He moved back to Britain in 1985 where from September 1985 he worked for two years as the BBC’s first in-vision children’s continuity presenter in what was known as the ‘Broom Cupboard’.
