Is The Watcher a true story?

There is some truth to the premise of The Watcher. Detailed in Reeves Wiedeman’s eponymous report for The Cut of New York Magazine, a family’s chilling ordeal serves as the basis for the television drama. In fact, shortly after they began renovating their home at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, Derek and Maria Broaddus received strange letters from a person who only identified themselves as “The Watcher.” Although there are numerous discrepancies between the events depicted in the series and the events that actually took place, the core of the plot has not changed significantly.

After finishing painting in June 2014, Derek Broaddus made the decision to check the mail at his new home before he went to bed. He was sorting through his mail when he came across a white card-shaped envelope containing a letter that read “The Watcher.” The letter began in a friendly manner, seeming to extend a warm welcome to the new family who had moved into the neighborhood; However, it soon took a strange turn. The letter’s author stated that her family had watched 657 Boulevard since the 1920s, when the stranger’s grandfather first started watching the show. Around 1905, the Broaddus family first built the house, which they later bought for a price of $1.3 million.

The letter gave details of what The Watcher had found out about the Broaddus family’s new home and the changes they made to their lives there. Derek’s plan to hire contractors to renovate the home was deemed a “bad move” by the stranger and condemned by the stranger. You don’t want to upset the people at 657 Boulevard, do you? The new homeowners were assured in the letter that the home would be content with youthful blood living in it and that the author knew the family’s three children. This information was also included in the letter.

As soon as Derek saw the letter, he ran back inside and quickly dialed 911. He was petrified by the letter’s contents. After law enforcement police arrived at the scene, they questioned Derek about whether or not he had any opponents. After this, Derek returned home to his family and then wrote a letter to the former owners, John and Andrea Woods. After living in the home for 23 years, the Woods family said they never felt like anyone was watching them. They added that they believed no one else lived in the house. During their final days at home, the couple admitted they did indeed receive a strange letter from someone who only identified themselves as “The Watcher,” but that they had given little thought to it at the time.

After another fortnight, the mailbox at 657 Boulevard received another letter addressed to “Mr. and Mrs. Braddus.” The author stated that they already knew the children’s names, which were the same ones Mary had cried out in the days before. The writer claimed to have learned more about the home and its new tenants, sharing that they already knew the children’s names. It seems that the stranger explained that the house was eagerly waiting for the family to move in, and the author added that they knew that one of the children loved to paint.

As could be expected, the family became afraid of what to do and eventually decided not to bring their children with them anymore. This led to The Watcher sending a second letter inquiring about the whereabouts of the family and why the house seemed to miss them so much. Before this tragedy, the community of Westfield, New Jersey was widely considered one of the safest communities in the state. It is important to keep this fact in mind. Still, “The Watcher” made quick work of destroying that reputation. Michael Langford, whose home provided a convenient vantage point for investigating the crime scene, was one of the first people questioned by police in connection with the investigation.

Michael had been summoned by the authorities for questioning shortly after the first letter, but the continued arrival of the letters, combined with a failed subterfuge by the Broaddus family, apparently cleared him of any suspicion. Authorities had brought Michael in for questioning shortly after the first letter. In the months that followed, the Broaddus suspected many of their neighbors and were very concerned about the events that had transpired. They even went so far as to consider taking legal action against the former owner of the property for not being notified of the mysterious letter. Although no one was arrested in connection with the incident, the Broaddus family was able to sell the home for $400,000 less than what they paid for the original purchase.

All in all, we would like to reiterate that the events depicted in The Watcher on Netflix are heavily influenced by the true story of the Broaddus family. On the other hand, the writers changed some key aspects of the story and took some liberties in their creative process. In addition to Dean and Nora Brannock having only two children instead of the original three, the show also rebranded the leading couple, changing their names to Dean and Nora Brannock. It’s interesting to note that the story was also adapted by Lifetime for production of the same film, although the Broaddus weren’t happy with the decision.
