A new documentary series called The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist has just premiered on Netflix. It features in-depth exclusive interviews with Alexis Neiers (now known as Alexis Haines because she got married) and Nick Prugo. In Calabasas, California, there is a ring of convicted thieves known as “The Bling Ring.” Prugo and Neiers are two of the most prominent members of this group. They have broken into the homes of several famous celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom, as well as others.
It’s the perfect time to revisit Sofia Coppola’s satirical crime film The Bling Ring, released in 2013 and based on the crimes, as Netflix documentaries about the crimes are now available to stream in their entirety. The Bling Ring
The Bling Ring is a satirical crime film released in 2013 and written and directed by Sofia Coppola[5]. The film stars an ensemble cast led by Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, and Claire Julien. It is based on an article written by Nancy Jo Sales for Vanity Fair in 2010 titled “The Suspects Wore Louboutins.” This piece discusses a real-life criminal organization known as the Bling Ring. The plot centers around a gang of teenagers who are obsessed with gaining recognition and use the internet to find out where famous people are hiding so they can steal their homes.
The film was produced in many countries around the world, including the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, France, Germany, and Japan. In December of 2011, Coppola began work on a script inspired by a real-life robbery. In early 2012, the casting process took place, and principal photography did not begin until March of the same year in Los Angeles, California.
At the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, the film The Bling Ring made its world premiere on May 1, 2013, in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival. On June 14, 2013, it was released in select A24 theaters in the United States, and a week later, it was released in theaters nationwide. The film was met with generally favorable reviews from critics; many of them praised the cast and Coppola’s “stylish” direction; Watson, in particular, was praised for her performance. Others, on the other hand, faulted the film for its morally ambiguous stance towards the subject.
The Bling Ring was the last film made by cinematographer Harris Savides before he passed away from brain cancer during the film’s post-production process. The film was meant to be a tribute to him.
Production
Development
It was claimed in December 2011 that Sofia Coppola was working on the screenplay for a film based on the Bling Ring crimes and that she would direct and produce the film herself. Through his production business, American Zoetrope, his father, Francis Ford Coppola, served in the capacity of executive producer on the project. It was announced in April 2012 that financial arrangements had been made with NALA Films, and that Roman Coppola would also serve as a producer on the film.
Coppola refers to the group of juvenile offenders as “products of our burgeoning reality TV society.” [Coppola] A break from Coppola’s earlier works that focused on the female perspective, the film has several female characters portrayed as strong and independent. She said that instead of a girl trying to find herself in a new foreign country, the story of The Bling Ring focuses on “girls trying other people’s things to find themselves.” This is in contrast to the woman’s perspective in the movie “Lost in Translation,” which follows a woman as she searches for herself in a new country. Despite the fact that The Bling Ring explored a more materialistic and glorified sense of style and culture, Coppola said the film was inspired by “a really enjoyable experience to be part of in a way that’s not like of myself. Throwing
Because of the newness they brought to the film, Coppola decided to cast young actors who were the same age as the real children but relatively unknown (except for Emma Watson). On February 29, 2012, Emma Watson was announced as joining the cast of the film, and on March 1, 2012, it was announced that Taissa Farmiga had also joined the main cast. In addition, the casting of Leslie Mann and Israel Broussard was announced by The Hollywood Reporter at the beginning of March. Filming
The majority of filming was done in and around the city of Los Angeles, California, throughout the months of March and April 2012, specifically in West Hollywood, Lynwood, and Venice. Both Paris Hilton, who was the victim of the actual Bling Ring robbery, and Kirsten Dunst appear in the film in a cameo capacity. Some of the sequences were filmed at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California, as well as at the homes of some of the famous victims.
