The film adaptation of Christopher Pike’s novel of the same name “The Midnight Club” is not based on a true story, but on the book of the same name (pseudonym for Kevin McFadden). In addition, the play adapts several of Pike’s other works, such as “Witch”, “Gimme a Kiss”, “The Wicked Heart” and “Road to Nowhere”. Pike came into contact with a young adolescent girl who was in the final stages of her life and it was through this interaction that he conceived the concept for The Midnight Club. She was a supporter of Pike’s work, and as her final request, her parents contacted the writer, expecting that he might see their daughter.

Pike couldn’t see the girl in person since she lived across the nation from him; Despite this, he was able to keep in touch with her through letters and phone calls. She explained that she and a few other patients would get together at the hospital in the evenings to talk about his novels. She said they did this every night. Pike came up with the idea for The Midnight Club to pay tribute to her and her friends; but instead of dealing with his own memories, he had new ones to relate. Pike generously offered to give the girl the first manuscript of the book, but she insisted on waiting to read it until it was finished and published. Pike’s efforts were ultimately unsuccessful and she did not make it through the ordeal alive.

Mike Flanagan was really blown away by the book when it was first published. Unlike the other horror books Flanagan had been reading at the same time, this one was about young adults and dealt with serious themes like mortality, making it an engaging read for him. “I owe a lot of what I am now to his work. He wrote some material that was considered fairly advanced by his younger readers, and it wasn’t at all uncommon for his teenage characters to die in ways that were considered quite shocking. His stories were full of things that I found extremely exciting, adventurous and dark at the same time. “As a result, I developed a kind of addiction,” he explained.

A few years later, when Flanagan was beginning his writing and directing career, he made the decision that The Midnight Club would be the first film he would make. He then asked his loved ones and close friends for financial support to produce the film. Everything was set for Flanagan’s first film on a limited budget. But when he suggested it to Pike’s publishers, they immediately wrote him a letter urging him to stop. Even when he was uncomfortable, he turned to other projects and established himself as a prominent figure in the horror genre with films such as “Gerald’s Game” and “The Haunting of Hill House”. Still, he couldn’t shake the thought of The Midnight Club.

“When I was a teenager, I thought I’d get this stupid little YA novella that’s about a creepy grim reaper or something. Instead, I got The Midnight Club, which was a particularly shocking experience for me. But in fact, the story was about young people coming to terms with terminal illnesses and their own mortality. And in that regard, too, it held back no punches. He described it as “a real lesson in how to use genres to talk about extremely serious things.” “It was a great education,” he remarked. He once again brought up the concept of an adaptation, but this time in the form of a television series. In May 2020, it was reported that Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong would be adapting Christopher Pike’s young adult novel The Midnight Club into a film for Netflix. The Midnight Club was written for young adults.

Production on the project began on March 15, 2021 in Burnaby, British Columbia and was scheduled to complete on September 8, 2021, but was completed on September 10. Flanagan directed the first two episodes of the series. while subsequent episodes of the season were helmed by directors Axelle Carolyn, Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, Michael Fimognari, Morgan Beggs and Viet Nguyen. Flanagan also directed the first two episodes of the series.
