On Wednesday, the Braves announced they had contract-picked top infield prospect Vaughn Grissom from Double-A Mississippi and reactivated right-hander Kirby Yates from the 60-day disabled list. First baseman Mike Ford was restored from the 10-day IL, placed on the 40-man roster and earmarked for Atlanta’s assignment. Outfielder Adam Duvall was promoted from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL.
After that, Vaughn’s friendship with Marquis, a former baseball player, is the main cause for concern. Let’s learn more about the specifics.
Marquis Grissom has been a football legend since the early 1990s, but Vaughn Grissom has recently taken the baseball world by storm.
Vaughn, a 21-year-old rookie selected in the 11th round of the 2019 draft, has risen rapidly through the junior grades and has slashed .363/.408/.516 in his first 98 Double-A plate appearances. His .312/.404/.487 line in 344 plate appearances in High-A this year also deserves a mention, though he’s never played over A-ball.
It’s only natural to assume that the huge success of Michael Harris II has given front management the confidence to do it again, considering the Braves have twice aggressively promoted a top contender straight from Double-A this season .
Marquis, on the other hand, played both the outfield and pitcher for the Florida A&M University baseball team. He played for the Rattlers for two seasons (1987 and 1988) and batting .408.
In 1988, he led all Division I players in triples and runs scored per game. He maintained a .643 batting average while fielding two complete games, and that season the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament selected him as its most outstanding player. In 2014 he was inducted into the MEAC Hall of Fame.
Vaughn and Marquis don’t appear to be connected, but share a love of baseball. When they revealed their last name, fans were stumped.
Who is Vaughn Grissom’s father?
Everyone assumed that Vaughn Grissom and former baseball player Marquis Grissom were father and son because of their shared surname. Nothing has been verified yet. Neither the players nor any reliable media source have spoken about this issue.
In 2015, Marquis and Sharron lived in Sandy Springs and Fayetteville, both in Georgia. His five children are Micah, D’monte, Tiana, Marquis, Jr. and Gabriella. Marquis Jr. was selected by the Washington Nationals in the thirteenth round of the 2022 MLB Draft. Throughout his gaming career, Grissom bought houses for his parents and each of his 14 siblings.
A year after his retirement, Grissom founded the Marquis Grissom Baseball Association, a nonprofit organization that hosts baseball games for underprivileged children in the Atlanta area.
Antonio, Grissom’s younger brother, played in the Expos and Philadelphia Phillies farm systems.
Vaughn Grissom Wikipedia
Grissom started the year at High-A Rome before being transferred to Mississippi. While it would be an amazing leap to the majors, the Braves’ need for a center infielder and their success in AA could only justify the early call-up.
With Mississippi, Grissom hits an absurd .364 with three homers through 24 games, enough for a .924 OPS. Also hit .312 with 11 homers in 74 games for Rome. The 21-year-old shortstop can certainly score, and if the Braves are to continue down that path, he’ll also need to be a capable second baseman.
