Jeff Garlin ‘works hard’ after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder

Jeff Garlin is doing his best after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, according to his ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ co-star Susie Essman.
“He works very hard. He’s on medication, is in therapy and is working hard to deal with it,” the actress told Page Six exclusively on Friday night at a cocktail party for the upcoming Broadway musical Some Like It Hot.
Garlin, 60, revealed on Instagram in September that he has been diagnosed with a mental health disorder that causes extreme mood swings.
“Bipolar is a motherfucker,” he wrote. “Sometimes it’s just too much to handle. I’m doing the best I can. This is the first time I’ve opened up about it.”
However, the diagnosis did not stop the comedian from filming the 12th season of “Curb”.
“Just got home for Thanksgiving and this is the funniest season,” Essman, 67, teased us. “I’ve already lost my voice screaming and yelling at Larry [David] and Jeff so more to come. I mean, I literally got laryngitis from yelling at them, but they deserve it, right?
The ‘Broad City’ star said fans are often disappointed that she is nothing like her snappy ‘Curb’ character Susie Greene, who seemingly can’t say a sentence without swearing and is always roaring at David, 75, and Garlin , her on-screen husband.
“I don’t like screaming and screaming,” she explained. “I love the character of Susie Green. I don’t act like this in real life. People stop me on the street and I am kind to them and I can see from their faces that they are clearly disappointed and upset that I am nice.”
Essman has worked in the comedy world for over three decades and has developed close friendships with several peers over the years, including the late Gilbert Gottfried, whose funeral she spoke at in April.
“I don’t know anyone in my entire life who’s cheaper than Gilbert,” she joked on Page Six. “It was pathological, but everything about Gilbert was so endearing – like a child you want to take care of, which I also consider manipulative. He did it so you could take care of him, but he was the cheapest person in the world.
Other celebrities at the cocktail party included designers Zac Posen, David Lauren and Lauren Bush Lauren, actors Tony Danza and Gina Gershon, “Beverly Hills, 90210” creator Darren Star and journalist Rob Shuter. They were entertained by Marc Shaiman, who wrote the music and co-wrote the lyrics to “Some Like It Hot”, and sat down at the piano to sing the title song.
