Jeffrey Dahmer, also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster, was an American serial killer and sex offender. Between 1978 and 1991, he murdered and dismembered 17 men and boys.

Many of his later murders included necrophilia, cannibalism, and the permanent preservation of body parts, usually whole or part of a skeleton. Dahmer was found legally sane at his trial despite suffering from borderline personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, and psychotic disorder.

On February 17, 1992, he was convicted of 15 of 16 murders in Wisconsin and sentenced to 15 life sentences. Dahmer was eventually sentenced to a 16th life sentence in 1978 in Ohio for another crime.

First half of life

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Lionel and Joyce Dahmer. He was considered an enthusiastic and joyful child until the age of four when he underwent double hernia surgery.

After the birth of his younger brother, his family moved frequently. In his teenage years, he became more withdrawn, agitated and friendless.

Dahmer claimed that his compulsion for necrophilia and killing began when he was 14, but it appears that the breakdown of his parents’ marriage and their ugly divorce a few years later were the spark to turn these thoughts into action.

His alcohol consumption got out of hand when he committed his first murder. He dropped out of Ohio State University after only one semester because his newlywed father insisted he join the Army.

Dahmer then enlisted in 1978 and was soon drafted into the German army, but his drinking problem worsened. The Army discharged him in early 1981, and Dahmer returned to Ohio after his release.

His father then sent him to live with his grandmother in Wisconsin after being arrested for disorderly conduct later that year. This certainly did not stop his drinking and the following summer he was jailed for indecent exposure.

He was arrested again in 1986 after two boys accused him of masturbating in front of them and received a year’s probation.

First Four Murders

In June 1978, shortly after graduating from high school, Dahmer picked up a hitchhiker named Steven Hicks and drove him to his parents’ house. Dahmer got him drunk and punched him in the head with a barbell and strangled him to death.

Later, he dismembered the body of his first victim, stuffed the body parts into plastic bags and buried them behind his parents’ house, before crushing the bones with a sledgehammer and scattering them in a forest valley.

Dahmer did not kill his second victim, Steven Tuomey, until September 1987. They check into a hotel room and drink, and Dahmer wakes up to find Tuomi dead with no memory of the previous night’s events.

He bought a huge suitcase to transfer Tuomi’s body to his grandmother’s basement, where he mutilated and masturbated the body before disposing of the remains.

Damar then killed two others at his grandmother’s house. She grew tired of his lateness and drinking, despite having no awareness of his other activities, and he forced her to leave in 1988.

Allegations of sexual harassment

Dahmer had an incredibly lucky escape in September 1989, when an incident with a 13-year-old Laotian boy led to charges of sexual exploitation and second-degree sexual assault. He pleaded guilty, complaining that the boy looked too big.

While awaiting sentencing in his sexual assault case, Dahmer seduced, drugged, strangled, raped, photographed, dismembered and disposed of an aspiring model named Anthony Sears in March 1989.

Dahmer was the epitome of remorse during his trial for child molestation in May 1989, eloquently arguing in his own defense about how he had learned the error of his ways and how his arrest marked a turning point in his life.

His defense attorney argued that he needed therapy rather than punishment, and the judge agreed, imposing a one-year prison sentence that allowed Dahmer to work during the day and return to prison at night, as well as five years of probation.

The judge, however, granted Dahmer early release after serving just 10 months of his sentence. After his release, he briefly lived with his grandmother, during which time he does not appear to have contributed to the body count before returning to his own apartment.

The last 13 victims

Dahmer’s victim count increased over the next two years, from four to seventeen. As he advanced, he instituted rituals, experimented with chemical disposal methods, and often consumed the flesh of his victims.

Dahmer attempted crude lobotomies on victims while they were still alive, drilling holes in their skulls and injecting them with muriatic acid.

On May 27, 1991, Dahmer’s neighbor, Sandra Smith, called the police to report that an Asian youth was running naked down the street. When the police arrive, the boy is confused, and they take Dahmer’s word that the boy is her 19-year-old boyfriend.

In reality, the boy was 14 years old and the Laotian teenager Dahmer’s brother was abused three years earlier.

After the police leave, Dahmer kills the boy and continues his work. Police officers would have found the body of Dahmer’s 12th victim, Tony Hughes, if they had conducted even a brief search. Before being caught, Dahmer killed four more people.

Jeffrey Dahmer invited Tracy Edwards to his home for a movie and drinks on July 22, 1991. Dahmer then grabbed Edwards and threatened him with a knife. Edwards, on the other hand, managed to free himself from his bonds and alert two passing police officers.

Because of Edward’s escape, body parts discovered in Dahmer’s refrigerator and Polaroid photos of his victims were closely tied to his infamous murders. Jeffrey Dahmer was eventually caught, convicted and sentenced to prison.

Police subsequently searched his apartment and found a head in the fridge, three more in the freezer, and several additional gruesome items, including preserved skulls, jars containing genitalia, and gruesome Polaroid images of his victims.

Following his arrest in February 1991, Dahmer was convicted in Milwaukee and charged in 1992 with 15 counts of first-degree murder. Dahmer’s crimes were heinous and horrific. He was also charged with cannibalism, necrophilia, pedophilia and several other crimes.

Dahmer was eventually convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 consecutive life sentences, totaling 975 years; A 16th life sentence was later added for the murder of Steven Hicks in 1978.
