Katharine McPhee’s grandparents once gave her tuna for Christmas
Katharine McPhee has received unforgettable Christmas gifts over the years, but none compares to one gift from her grandparents.
“My grandparents, as they got older, started giving family really, really weird gifts from their travels,” the American Idol alumnus told Page Six exclusively Sunday at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at The Grove in Los Angeles.
“The last thing that was very strange was a box full of canned tuna,” she explained, explaining that it was “fresh” tuna, as opposed to the cans that were in the couple’s cupboard.
“I just thought, ‘Wow, thank you for the canned tuna,'” recalls McPhee, 38, recalling a similar memory in her husband, David Foster.
“It reminds me my grandparents,” the 73-year-old Grammy Award-winning music producer told us. “When I was a kid, they would come to us and give us an orange. Orange! So what?
For the event, where a handful of musical guests performed Christmas songs live for a CBS special that airs next month, McPhee opted for a white strapless gown with puff sleeves, while Foster opted for a black suit and a white button-up shirt he paired with a navy blue Louis Vuitton scarf.
Their son Rennie, who turns 2 in February, was in attendance to see his parents take the stage and perform some seasonal tracks from their upcoming album ‘Christmas Songs’.
With new music, an accompanying tour, the launch of her jewelry line and a toddler at home, McPhee and Foster are looking forward to spending some quality time this holiday season.
“We’re just always on the go and it’s great to be busy, but it’s going to be great not to be busy and just be home and order some meals, cook some meals, decorate the Christmas tree and spend the holidays decorating and just relax,” said the Page actress. Six and other reporters. “We’re so burned out; we’re excited to just do nothing.”
Foster couldn’t disagree, noting that “they’ve traveled so much this year.”
Ironically, the couple told us earlier this week that part of their Christmas gift to each other would likely be a getaway to the slopes.
“I think we’ll go skiing with friends – say, ‘You buy the lift tickets, I’ll take the hotel,'” McPhee said.
The “Over It” singer and Foster, who is more than three decades her senior, met on the set of season five of American Idol in 2006, when she was a contestant and he was a mentor.
Although they didn’t start dating until 2017, McPhee said on Sunday: “I think the day I was in the studio with [him]I was like, I really have the charm and charisma of David Foster.”
She noted: “The age difference doesn’t change, but obviously you’re growing up, so it wasn’t the same back then. I was so enchanted by it, but it wasn’t like now.”
The musically talented duo made their red carpet debut at the 2018 Met Gala. Two months later, Foster proposed, and in June 2019, the duo said “Yes.”
