Farmer received his diploma from the Marist School in Atlanta, Georgia, where he participated in both baseball and football while there. Farmer’s role as a high school quarterback in the Hollywood blockbuster The Blind Side (2009) was filmed while he was still a student at Marist.

Farmer played shortstop while at the University of Georgia (UGA), where he set a record .968 for the best fielding percentage ever recorded at the shortstop position on the UGA baseball team. His batting average was .308 and he scored for a .308 batting average.

In 2011, he was a member of the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he played summer baseball for his collegiate team.
