Lana Del Rey’s course started at the Clive Davis Institute at New York University

Lana Del Rey’s ingenious contribution to the pressing problems of the world through her melancholic music is finally to be explored at The Clive Davis Institute of New York University in the next month.

The university is launching a course entirely dedicated to exploring the iconic singer / songwriter’s connections with social justice movements, including Black Lives Matter, Me Too and Times Up. by variety.

Titled “Themes in Recorded Music: Lana Del Rey”, the two-credit course will run from October 20 to December 8 and will be taught by acclaimed journalist and author Kathy Iandoli.

The course will also explore the singer’s relationship with feminism as well as her musical influence, outlet reports.

According DiversityThe course description reads: “In eight critically acclaimed albums, the six-time Grammy-nominated artist presented a sad, melancholic and baroque version of dream pop, which in turn helped change and reinvent the sound (and mood). ) mainstream music after 2010.

“Through her fascinating visuals and thematic focus on mental health and tales of toxic, broken love, Del Rey has provided a new platform for artists of all genders to create ‘anti-pop’ works of substances that could live in the mainstream that was once classified as bubble gum.”

Iandoli said the singer, who graduated from Fordham University in New York, “is both a project and a cautionary tale, a complicated pop star that appeals so much to her fans, not because of how they feel about her, but rather that how it makes them feel about themselves ”.

“In her music, she changed the parameters of baroque pop, and now more specifically ‘sad pop girl’, extending the subject matter, which is sometimes controversial and demanding. Earlier this year, the university’s Clive Davis Institute introduced its first-ever Taylor Swift course, which ran from January 26 to March 9.

The course proved so popular that the University of Texas at Austin has followed suit and is now offering students a songwriting course that focuses on the 11-time Grammy Award-winning approach to songwriting.

Nicknamed “Literary Contests and Contexts: The Taylor Swift Songbook,” English professor Dr. Elizabeth Scala will lead the course starting this fall.
