Libbie Mugrabi claims to be a victim of the Hamptons housekeeper and cops
Libbie Mugrabi, who was arrested this week and charged with assaulting a landlady, told The Post she was a victim – and that her 10,000-square-foot home was hijacked while she was away by “domestic workers who shouldn’t be living” there . They weren’t doing any work. They were glamping in the Hamptons.
The Southampton Police Department issued a statement earlier this week saying Mugrabi had been charged with making criminal threats, a felony and possession of a weapon.
The unnamed housekeeper told Southampton Police that Mugrabi attacked her with a mop stick and a knife on July 31 and destroyed her mobile phone. A police report was filed in the summer and the landlady claimed the fight was over money Mugrabi owed her.
But Mugrabi accused The Post that workmen overtook her house and that a landlady attacked her and stole her designer shoes. She also claims she was beaten by Southampton Police officers.
Mugrabi – whose 2020 split from billionaire and art collector David Mugrabi has been called the “worst divorce” for New York’s elite – says she encountered uninvited guests after returning home from a seven-week summer getaway in the early hours of July 31.
On this trip, Mugrabi previously told The Post $500,000 worth of clothing and jewelry were stolen from her in a resort in Ibiza.
“They should have been working in my house but not living in my house,” Mugrabi said of the workers, adding that they were Latin American. “The night I got home there was a woman in my guest room – she was about to be fired. I went to the bathroom, saw her and got scared to death.
Mugrabi said she told the woman who was employed as a housekeeper to leave. “She started throwing things at me,” said a socialite. “She threw a mobile phone and a mop head with a string at me. She screamed like crazy and threw a Bible at me.
“I went to my bedroom and closed the door. I heard more screaming and called her Uber [at around 3 a.m. on July 31]. My handyman convinced her to leave,” added Mugrabi. “She complained that she had no cash. I gave her $500 or $600 from my wallet. I just wanted her to leave… She was driven to Brooklyn. It cost me $268. Plus, she had my classic ballet flats, Chanel shoes, and Balenciaga shoes in her bag.
The Post displayed an Uber bill.
Regarding the attack allegation against her, Mugrabi said: “I would never hit anyone. I am not physically aggressive. I’m aggressive in my voice. Everything she said I did to her, she did to me.
A source close to Mugrabi told The Post that the alleged intruders “lived in the house in July, drove Libbie’s Porsche, slept in her bed and wore her clothes – including a hat with ‘Libbie’ on the front.”
Mugraby’s mother, Jane Scher, also claimed in The Post that she had witnessed the alleged takeover firsthand.
“I went home [in July] because Libbie said I could stay there while she’s in Europe,” said Scher, a Manhattan-based beauty nurse. “The people there told me I could only enter the pool house and not be allowed in the main house.
“At first I couldn’t reach Libbie and I didn’t want to upset anyone. So I stayed in [600-square-foot] pool house where I had to share a bed with my friend. She couldn’t believe these people had taken over Libbie’s house.”
Meanwhile, Scher claimed: “They were in the pool and in the hot tub and wouldn’t even give me a cup of coffee. I thought they had a better life than me.”
When Scher made contact with her daughter, “Libbie told them to feed me. They gave me some ginger soup. It tasted OK. I was starving.”
Mugrabi said she had moved the other people out of the house by August 9.
On Tuesday this week, Southampton police showed up at her home in Water Mill, where she was working with fashion consultant Marko Matysik.
“Suddenly, the police became aggressive for no reason,” said Mugrabi. “They attacked me and handcuffed me. I said they’re twisting my wrist. They said, “All right.” I asked them to read me my rights. They said, “We don’t read the rights to it.”
Matysik was watching from the terrace at the time. “The next thing I found out was Libbie in handcuffs. She was wearing a wife beater and tight pants. I grabbed as many of her handbags and hand luggage as I could [in case she needed anything inside them] and got into a suburban chauffeur and followed the police car.
Mugrabi – who once compared herself to Princess Diana, calling her marriage a “golden cage” – was arrested on charges stemming from the alleged incident in July.
“They wanted to get me for something,” Mugrabi said of the police. “I don’t know what I was doing in Southampton other than paying taxes.”
Mugrabi said the cops “wrung my fingers” when they took her fingerprints. Matysik added that the escort was held for about four hours while the police handled the paperwork: “They were very happy to have her in their custody.”
She received a ticket ordering her to appear in court on December 6.
The Southampton Police Department did not respond to requests for comment.
“She seems to be the clear victim here,” Arthur Aidal’s lawyer from Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins, who represents Mugrabi, told The Post. “There is a clear misunderstanding about what happened on the day of the incident. We look forward to working with the prosecution and dropping all charges against Libbie.”
After spending some time at her Upper East Side townhouse, Mugrabi was supposed to go to Miami for Thanksgiving – but she postponed the trip due to all the commotion. “I had Thanksgiving in New York,” she said on Thursday night. “I definitely wouldn’t have it in the Hamptons. I’m afraid to go there now.”
