Marc Shaiman calls ‘Some Like It Hot’ a ‘great fucking musical comedy’
Marc Shaiman described his new show “Some Like It Hot” for Page Six as “a great fucking musical comedy”.
“My Judaism is more important than being able to enjoy myself,” the Hairspray composer told us Friday night at a star-studded cocktail party for the show, which is based on Marilyn Monroe’s 1959 film of the same name.
“While I shouldn’t be joking anymore in this anti-Semitic world, I always just wait for the other shoe to fall.”
Despite restrained enthusiasm, the Tony winner, 63, explained that the musical comedy – co-written with longtime collaborator Scott Wittman – is “very contemporary in our themes”.
Shaiman said the series made many revisions to the script, which also starred Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, to deepen the characters.
He added that they are still improving the program, but he is happy to report that he is actually sleeping a little.
Like the movie, the musical tells the story of jazz-era musicians battling Prohibition – but now it features black actors and updates the theme of gender.
The series also deals with the film’s immortal final line – “nobody’s perfect” – in a “very wonderful way,” Shaiman teased.
Shaiman, who recently scored Billy Eichner’s romantic comedy Bros, also wowed the crowd at a star-studded party with a performance of the series’ title number.
“Some Like It Hot” is currently in preview and opens on December 11.
