Leicester: 1980-1987

Rush made his debut for his country in May 1980, just before signing with Liverpool. On 13 December of that year, he made his Liverpool debut against Ipswich Town in a First Division match at Portman Road. Wearing his number 7 shirt, he filled in for his future strike partner Kenny Dalglish, who was out with an ankle injury but was one of the best strikers in the world at the time. Ipswich was developing as a surprise title contender at this point, while Liverpool defended the league crown and competed for the European Cup. Liverpool’s first trophyless campaign in ten years took place in the 1984-85 campaign, although they did advance to their sixth European Cup final against Juventus in the match that resulted in the Heysel Stadium disaster. Before the match started, riots by football hooligans tore down a retaining wall, killing 39 Juventus fans. Juventus won 1-0 in the last game. Liverpool’s neighbors Everton defeated them with four games to go for the championship. After the Heysel disaster, all English teams were permanently banned from participating in European competitions; Liverpool would serve an extra season once the bans from the other English clubs were lifted. This prevented Rush and Liverpool from participating in the 1985-1986 UEFA Cup.

Rush scored two goals when Liverpool defeated Southampton 2-0 in the FA Cup semi-final at White Hart Lane during the 1985-86 season, securing a spot at Wembley to face Everton in the first all-Merseyside FA Cup -final. By beating Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool beat their city rivals to win the League title, which was also up for grabs with teams like West Ham United and Manchester United. When Gary Lineker outpaced Alan Hansen and defeated Grobbelaar on the second attempt, Everton took the lead, which they held until halftime. Rush, who had intercepted a pass from Jan Malby, turned Everton goalkeeper Bobby Mimms over 57 minutes into the second half to give Liverpool a point. Mlby was at the center of another attack six minutes later. He got the ball into the Everton box and sent a cross that was able to finish Craig Johnston. Liverpool currently led the game 2-1, but it remained close until Ronnie Whelan led another attack in the 84th minute.
