Issa Rae in Pyer Moss, Sergio Hudson and custom Jason Rembert at the CFDA Fashion Awards (2018)

– Issa is a special person. She is the champion of the underdog; defends others who look like her. I really appreciate having a client with this intention behind him.

“I remember the day it was announced [that she was hosting the CFDA Awards]Some really amazing great designers contacted her saying they would like to dress her up for this event. I thought, “I don’t want to work with any of these great designers; I want her to wear all black designers. I had a meeting with Issa and her publicist and they said, “Speak less. They were in. ‘

“The carpet was definitely a big moment. But as a whole, it is [night] was probably the strongest moment in my career. “

“Solange is special – she’s like a unicorn. With such a voice and such refinement and minimalist approach to his style.

“But when you look at this picture, what I love is that you can feel maximalism through minimalism. As simple as the silhouette of the dress, the cut chain to match the hair and headgear makes it timeless. This makes it an aspiration. “

Mary J. Blige at Dundas at the Super Bowl break show (2022)

“Mary J. Blige is a” fabulous ghetto. ” She has this extravagant style and loves shoes. And on a stage as big as the Super Bowl, I wanted to stay in her world. I wanted glitz and glam and I wanted it to shine.

“[The look] it was originally purple, and about three weeks before the Super Bowl, Mary called me and said, “I think we should make the option white.” The white version had come out maybe six or seven days before the Super Bowl, and it was beautiful. There was no comparison. There was no denying that white was the only one.

“Violet is actually what she wore on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter [Power Stylists 2022 issue]. So he got used to it! “

“[The look] it was actually very light; it looked like real metal, but it wasn’t. [At] in those days menswear was not as bold as it is now – there is so much versatility in menswear now and so much fluidity – so seeing it on the carpet and then on the covers of every newspaper the next day… it was a proud moment.

Rita Ora in Donnie Karan at the Oscar-winning Vanity Fair (2015)

“Rita is the only one who can wear anything. It was a custom Donna Karan gown, and Rita legit went to the In-N-Out Burger right in front of that rug. I thought, “I can’t believe you can wear that amazing see-through dress that hides nothing and still eat a cheeseburger.”

“You can’t wait, Spanx [under this] – you can’t wear anything.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Aliétte on the cover of Vanity Fair (2020)

AOC on the cover of Vanity Fair

“This suit was shipped to LA and was missing for four days, but had to be returned to New York City [for this shoot]. I thought, “I’m not sending this suit – I’ll go with it.” I flew with the suit and threw it myself. I’m not too good to be my own messenger; I can’t sew on my own buttons.

“I didn’t expect to be on the cover. I was not [even] expecting a loan. And I feel blessed, I feel honored. The place I grew up in Queens is part of [AOC’s] district. And one day I can’t wait for AOC to become president. I met her at the Met Gala and said, “Thank you for wearing my suit.”

Zenday in Aliétte in “Malcolm and Mary” (2021)

“[Zendaya’s stylist] Law Roach is one of my best friends and is like a creative genius. During a pandemic, he suddenly calls me and says, “I’m designing costumes for this movie, and I’d like to see if you can submit sketches … but I need them today.”

“I thought,” Okay, I’ve got you. ” I sent the sketches, went and got the samples, put the samples overnight, sewed the dress in the next two days, put the dress overnight. Then, in two days, we had to make a duplicate. But we did it!

“The movie came out in January. I had a job for Issa and she said, “Have you seen that movie yet?” I replied, “No, but my dress is in it.” She said, “There are three stars in the movie: John David Washington, Zendaya and the dress.”
