Likewise, Peta Jane Murgatroyd, his mother, is a professional Latin dancer. She participated in both the Broadway run and the world tour of the dance production Burn the Floor. The dancer’s success on the American version of Dancing with the Stars is most remembered for her involvement in those competitions.

Maksim “Maks” Aleksandrovich Chmerkovskiy, a Ukrainian-American Latin ballroom dance champion, choreographer and instructor (Ukrainian: аксим лександрови мерковски [mksm oleksndrowt tmrkousjk]; born on January 17, 1980). He rose to fame as one of the professional dancers in the second season of the American reality TV show Dancing with the Stars. Chmerkovskiy reached the final round five times during his 17 seasons as a professional contestant on the show, finishing second twice and third twice. With Olympic ice dancer Meryl Davis as his partner, Chmerkovskiy won his first Dancing with the Stars Championship on May 20, 2014. When Chmerkovskiy’s parents enrolled him in an aesthetic education program at the age of 4, he began to dance.

The school’s curriculum includes ballroom dancing and ways to prepare students for young men or women. He eventually started dancing Latin and ballroom as part of ten dance competitions. Chmerkovskiy played tennis, football and swimming when he was little.

He crushed his right leg while skiing when he was 13 years old, and a titanium rod was implanted to support his limb. Doctors predicted he would face long-term problems and little chance of a career in dance; nevertheless, he recovered and started dancing again six months later.

In 1994, the family moved to Brooklyn, New York.

Financial and linguistic limitations were some of the problems Chmerkovskiy and his family faced after their immigration. On his second day in the country, Chmerkovskiy witnessed the theft of a brand new set of inline skates. Chmerkovskiy also got the chance to start dancing again after moving to the US. At the age of 15 he started working as a dancer in a nearby Russian restaurant. Chmerkovskiy believed that winning dance competitions would be a means of advocating for a higher salary while working in the restaurant.

Chmerkovskiy participated as a dancer in the International Latin division at a professional level.

At age 16, in Ridgewood, New Jersey, Chmerkovskiy and his father launched Rising Stars Dance Academy, a competitive dance school aimed at young people.
Chmerkovskiy claimed he chose New Jersey because Brooklyn already had a large number of dance studios that he disapproved of. The studio moved for a while before settling in Saddle Brook, New Jersey. When choosing a New Jersey location in 2011, he stated, “I didn’t want to start a studio that would blend in with the others in the area. I wanted to open my studio in a place where it was the only one of its kind and where people could see it objectively.”

When he helped his brother Valentin, then 16, and Diana Olonetskaya, then 15, to become the first American dance team to win a junior world championship in 2001, Chmerkovskiy had his first major professional triumph.

Serge Onik and Kiki Nyemchek, who both participated in So You Think You Can Dance and placed fourth in Season 14 and Top Fourteen respectively, were dancers Chmerkovskiy also trained.

Chmerkovskiy runs a number of social and competitive dance studios in addition to Rising Stars under the name “Dance With Me”.

For fifteen seasons, professional dancer Chmerkovskiy participated in Dancing with the Stars as a professional dancer.
The “bad boy of the ballroom” was what people often called him. In the second season of the ABC series Dancing with the Stars, Chmerkovskiy made his debut alongside Tia Carrere.
Their tango was the most popular dance they performed. They came in sixth place. He and his singing partner Willa Ford finished sixth the following season. In March 2007, Chmerkovskiy returned to Dancing with the Stars for Season 4, this time partnering with boxer Laila Ali. They reached the championship round and took third place. He competed in Dancing with the Stars season 5 with Melanie Brown and the pair finished in second place. Chmerkovskiy would inform TV Guide Magazine after the season 5 finale that he would not be returning to the program. He then told People magazine that he had announced his retirement due to stress. Despite performing with his previous partner Melanie Brown for the 100th episode, Chmerkovskiy did not participate in season 6 of the show.

In the seventh season of the program, he made a comeback, this time partnering with Misty May-Treanor, a two-time gold medalist in volleyball at the Olympics. In week 3, Chmerkovskiy and May-Treanor had to leave the tournament. May-Treanor had to undergo surgery after rupturing her Achilles tendon during a practice session for their jive. They came in at number ten as a result of her withdrawal.

His partner for the eighth season of Dancing with the Stars was revealed as Denise Richards on Good Morning America on February 9, 2009. The pair finished 12th overall after being knocked out second in the tournament. He was paired with actress Debi Mazar in the ninth season when they finished fourth in elimination. Derek Hough’s illness forced Chmerkovskiy to team up with Joanna Krupa for a week midway through Season 9.
