The Jays selected Stroman, considered by many to be the most major-league-qualified pitcher in the 2012 MLB draft, 22nd overall, making him the first Duke player ever to be selected in the first round. On August 1, 2012, the Blue Jays promoted Stroman to the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats after he debuted with the Low-A Vancouver Canadians. On August 28, 2012, Stroman was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for the illegal stimulant methylhexanamine.

After serving his entire sentence, Stroman started the game for the Fisher Cats on May 19, 2013, pitching five innings without allowing a run.
