Michael Sheen criticized King Charles III’s decision to visit Wales for the first time since his ascension on September 16, a historic day for the country.
An actor born in Wales explained on Twitter This royal stop in Cardiff, Wales, Friday fell on Owain Glyndŵr’s day, and would be considered “insensitive” if the date had been chosen on purpose.
Owain Glyndŵr’s Day commemorates the day in 1400 when Glyndŵr started a 15-year uprising against the then King of England, Henry IV, after which his followers proclaimed him Prince of Wales.
The revolt is considered by many Welsh to be the last Welsh War of Independence, and Glyndŵr is seen as a symbol of Welsh nationalism and the independence movement.
“Choose September 16 to come to Wales, he only recently announced that he had created his son, William, as the new Prince of Wales, and choose that day September 16 to come here as his first visit as it seems like a king full of meaning,” explained Sheen .
The 53-year-old actor of “Queen” began the video by expressing “sincere sympathy to Karol and his family after the loss of his mother, grandmother and all who feel such a depth of emotion and a sense of this loss.” in the short history of Wales.
He further added that if the visit was intentionally scheduled for September 16, it could be considered “immune to insult.”
Or, “If it was done without realizing the importance of the date, you might be wondering what it actually meant to be Prince of Wales for so long if you are not aware of what that day means.”
Sheen added that he wanted to support those who saw the “irony” of the cancellation of traditional Welsh celebrations to accommodate King Charles’s visit.
Last week, the newly anointed monarch announced that 40-year-old Prince William and his 40-year-old wife Kate Middleton would assume the titles of the new Prince and Princess of Wales.
The royal couple released a statement following the announcement in which they spoke of a “deep attachment” to Wales. The couple lived in Anglesey, Wales from 2011-2013 while the Duke underwent Royal Air Force training.
Although the Queen and Queen Consort Camilla have been warmly welcomed by the crowds in Cardiff, the country is getting ready to move calling for the end of the title Prince of Wales.
