“Mike” star Russell Hornsby defends Hulu’s biography against Tyson’s criticism
Mike Tyson made it very clear how does he really think about “Mike” Hulu biography based on his life – and it’s not good.
But Russell Hornsby, who stars as Don King’s boxing promoter in the eight-episode series, said we were “trying to honor Mike Tyson and show some truth” about his life.
“He’s not the first to have a grudge against how he’s portrayed in a movie or how he might be portrayed in books,” Hornsby told The Post. “It’s a no-limit look at Tyson and his life, and you have to take the curves with a straight line.
“We didn’t try to praise him and we didn’t try to demonize him,” he said. “I think we were going to tell his story.”
Tyson, former heavyweight champion posted on his Instagram page that he did not authorize or receive payment for his life story.
“Don’t be fooled by Hulu. I do not endorse their stories about my life, “he wrote. “They stole my life story and didn’t pay me. To the Hulu executives, I’m just plain fucking they can sell on the auction block.
This wasn’t the first time Tyson had slammed the streaming network down; for the first time, the project was announced last year during Black History Month. “This announcement on the heels of social inequality in our country is a prime example of how Hulu’s corporate greed led to this voiceless cultural misappropriation of Tyson’s life story,” he wrote at the time.
“I think Mike feels that way. This man has been through a lot, ”said Hornsby. “It has had many ups and downs and has a right to feel that way, but I’m sure everything will be resolved in the future. I’m sure he has lawyers, Hulu has lawyers, and they’ll find out.
Trevante Rhodes (“Moonlight”) plays Tyson in “Mike,” which premiered on August 25 on the streamer.
Even with all of Tyson’s hostility, Hornsby said he would be delighted to meet the Brooklyn native.
“If I were to bump into Mike Tyson, I don’t think he has a problem with me personally. I don’t think his problem is with me [it’s] with others, ”he said. “My feelings for Mike and Don [King] is that I didn’t mean to slander them. I didn’t want to slander … I wanted to honor Don King and his legacy and what he meant to the boxing world.
So, in some cases it will be viewed negatively.
“Is [King] will be viewed positively in what he has done with putting a lot of money in the pockets of many warriors and making money for many people in this country… including whites? That’s what he said. “So we have to take a straight curve and balance the two. When you do, it encourages a real, nuanced conversation that I hope your audience is ready for.
“Hulu didn’t just want to slander Tyson, but the story is already there – so let’s talk about what was presented. I am asking the audience to evaluate the show through the prism of today’s perspective. Mike Tyson is a byproduct of being American Made… for better or for worse.
