Mountain Guide Dave McKinley: Where is he now?

The heartbreaking documentary Aftershock: Everest and The Nepal Earthquake follows the devastation caused by the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal and presents first-person testimonies from survivors who lived through such a horrific moment. In one-to-one conversations, the survivors tell their stories and the destruction they personally witnessed. Some people were glad of their lives because of the terrible event, others could not climb the snowy peaks of Everest.

When the earthquake struck, mountain guide Dave McKinley was in Nepal climbing Mount Everest. He spoke of the death and destruction he witnessed even though he escaped death’s clutches. Let’s find out Dave’s current whereabouts, shall we?

Dave McKinley: Who is he?

The fact that mountaineering wasn’t Dave McKinley’s first career choice may surprise readers. In fact, the New Zealander was interested in the art of cooking and, in addition to experience in the hotel industry, also had completed professional training as a chef. According to sources, Dave was a highly certified and accomplished chef who eventually grew tired of his job and began looking for justifications to lead an active, outdoor lifestyle. Dave eventually managed to escape from the kitchen and understood that he could make a living off his love of the outdoors. So, in the late 1990s, after obtaining the required certificates, he began working as a tourist guide.

Dave began his career as a tour guide in and around Queensland where he quickly gained a reputation for his skills and knowledge. Despite being familiar with the New Zealand mountain ranges, Dave decided to travel after becoming better known. As a result, he began to travel outside of his native country and became interested in the difficulties mountaineers encounter when climbing Mount Everest. Dave was inspired by this fascination to pursue his endeavors and he quickly jumped at the opportunity.

Incidentally, Dave was present at the earthquake in Nepal in 2015 and witnessed the devastation personally. Despite being in a dangerous situation and in a mountainous area, Dave managed to escape unharmed. He later recalled that some people were not so lucky and that the majority of survivors had lost a loved one or something precious in the disaster. Dave went on to explain that it was an eye-opening experience and made him incredibly grateful for his life.

What happened to Dave McKinley?

Dave continues to travel to a number of other countries including New Zealand, Australia, South America, Switzerland, France, Tibet and Alaska, proving that the earthquake and devastation couldn’t change his passion for mountaineering. Despite this, while Dave has scaled multiple Everest peaks, he has not climbed Everest since the disaster. Nonetheless, Dave’s career as an IFMGA leader seems to be thriving and he currently serves as a leader for numerous organizations.

As Dave is happily married to a former mountain guide, readers will be pleased to know that he also leads a fairly quiet personal life. The couple have built a great life together and are the proud parents of three beautiful children. The family lives in Twizel, New Zealand with their three dogs.
