Gold. If you’ve seen Zach Efron’s aptly titled film, Gold, you already know it can drive a man to murder. A string of murders ensues in Murder at Yellowstone City when prospector Robert Dunnigan announces his discovery of gold to the community.

The first murder victim is Dunnigan. Former slave Cicero, who just rode into town, is the prime suspect. He is arrested by the sheriff for the crime, but it quickly becomes clear that he has the wrong person.

Then who murdered Dunnigan and the other victims of Yellowstone City? Will the sheriff find out who the killer is? Let’s take a closer look at the film.

How does the movie begin?

Robert Dunnigan is thrown into the air when his explosives reveal the location of a gold mine, setting off the film’s dramatic opening. Cicero, on his way to Yellowstone City, sees this.

Robert travels to nearby Yellowstone City to alert locals to his discovery and takes a fortune-making vow after telling his wife, Emma, that he’s struck gold.

Soon after, Cicero enters the city, but some locals are suspicious of this stranger.

Cicero goes to the drawing room for a drink after leaving his horse with Violet, the neighborhood stable maid, and strikes up a conversation with the owner, Edgar, about their mutual interest in Shakespeare.

Things settle down after a while, but then Robert is killed returning from the local brothel and the sheriff arrests his prime suspect.

Who does the sheriff arrest for the crime?

Reverend Thaddeus Murphy is asked by the sheriff to build a coffin and make funeral arrangements after Robert’s body is discovered. The sheriff then goes to Cicero’s boarding house and makes an arrest for the prospector’s murder. He then threatens Cicero with hanging by hanging if he doesn’t admit his wrongdoing in front of the whole city.

Violet shows up after Cicero is locked up and informs the sheriff that Cicero couldn’t have committed the crime out of town because his horse never left the stables.

Cicero stays in his cell because the sheriff fired Violet. The pastor’s wife, Alice, later pays the unfortunate stranger a visit and he entrusts his life to her. We learn that he is an orphan and that the character in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar made him choose the name Cicero.

Although Alice does not possess Shakespeare’s entire body, she does possess a Bible, which she leaves with him before returning to her husband.

Do people think Cicero killed the prospector?

A prostitute named Isabel, who has fallen in love with Robert, believes that Cicero may have murdered her lover. Some of the other women she is dating also believe he is guilty.

When Alice tells her husband about her encounter with Cicero, she makes it clear to him that she still believes in his innocence.

Violet also believes that Robert is innocent, and when she discovers evidence of another reason for Robert’s death, her thoughts are almost confirmed.

What does Violet find?

Emma, Robert’s wife, is given a room to stay in after his death and moves to the city. The sheriff informs Emma that the person responsible for her husband’s death will be held accountable. Despite her grief, she asks the sheriff to call Roberts “darling” as she seems more interested in the person her husband may have been having an affair with.

Violet pays the woman a visit while Emma is in town and finds a note in her cabin. It’s a letter from Emma’s supposed lover.

Could Robert have been killed by Emma’s lover to get Robert out of the way? It’s a possibility, and Violet gives Thaddeus the news, believing it might be related to the crime.

The pastor then asks Cicero if he killed Robert while visiting him. Cicero claims to be innocent.

Later, Emma meets with the pastor and the sheriff. Emma expresses to them her desire to move out of town and start a new life.

After this discussion, Thaddeus presents the letter to the sheriff and informs him that Cicero does not appear to be a murderer. However, the sheriff is still reluctant to free the prisoner, in part because of a mistake he made years earlier when releasing another prisoner who later killed his wife.

When the pastor leaves, the sheriff discusses the love letter with his son Jimmy, a part-time deputy, urging him to look into it.

Does the killer strike again?

Yes! When he cuts Violet’s throat, the killer kills another person. Coincidentally, Cicero escapes from his prison (we are not told how), and the sheriff assumes that Cicero is responsible for Violet’s death. The sheriff and his men make their way to Cicero and a chase begins. After jumping from his horse into a tree, Cicero is able to hide, but not before being shot.

Cicero returns to town and enters the safety of the church, where Thaddeus and Alice tend to him while the sheriff and his men head off in the wrong direction.

Thaddeus realizes that the bullet he took from Cicero’s body may not be the same as the one that murdered Robert. He digs up the prospector’s body to confirm this, proving his suspicions.

Meanwhile, Jimmy shows up at the brothel and pays Isabel for some sex. Unfortunately for her, he isn’t motivated solely by sexual desire when he murders her with her back to him. Jimmy is the real killer, it’s very obvious now!

However, he did not work alone.

What was the motivation for the murders?

We learn that Jimmy killed Isabel at Emma’s request and that they were in love. He was probably instructed by Emma to kill Isabel because she was having an affair with her husband.

We also learn that Jimmy killed Robert, perhaps on Emma’s orders, so they could live together.

Poor Violet was murdered by Jimmy presumably because of the evidence she uncovered.

What happens to Cicero?

In the course of their hunt, the sheriff and his men eventually find Cicero at the pastor’s residence.

When Thaddeus refuses to hand Cicero over, a shootout ensues, resulting in the deaths of many of the sheriff’s men.

Cicero is able to escape on his horse while Alice is mounted and fires a gun at the men after them as the fight continues.

They arrive at a cabin, a supposed safe haven, but Jimmy and one of the sheriff’s men spot them there.

Another gunfight erupts, but Cicero’s death seems imminent as his ammunition is running low. Jimmy continues to shoot him, despite successfully killing one of the men. But suddenly, just in time, Thaddeus shows up, shoots Jimmy, and then ties him up.

Will the sheriff find out the killer’s identity?

Back in town are Alice, Cicero and Thaddeus.

On the way, they introduce Jimmy to the sheriff.

Jimmy claims to be innocent, but when the sheriff calls Emma into his office and she doesn’t fully accuse Jimmy, her murderous conspiracy is discovered.

After losing her composure, Emma shoots the sheriff. Jimmy comes to his father’s rescue, but Thaddeus shoots and mortally wounds him.

Although we don’t see it, it’s safe to assume that Jimmy’s injured father also died in his arms shortly after Jimmy’s death.

Outside, Emma has now escaped and Thaddeus and Alice are in pursuit. Emma is about to shoot Thaddeus when Alice shoots, killing Emma.

Thaddeus and Alice promise to fix and improve the community when the film ends. Cicero mounts his horse and leaves the village, which caused him more grief than he could ever have imagined when they discussed their intentions.
