What does “MIN” mean on the Ouija board?
Before Abby and Gretchen can find the shed, Margaret pulls out a Ouija board, which they play with as a joke.
In unison, the women put their hands on the board and asked any spirits there to help them. Their hands begin to move, but the girls think Margaret is messing with them.
Before they stop their experiment and laugh it off, they spell the letters “MIN.” But András was probably trying to talk to them. “Mine,” he kept saying about Gretchen later. The board spelled out “MINE.”
What will happen at the end of “My Best Friend’s Exorcism”?
Gretchen was saved from András not by the Bible or crosses, but by Abby’s friendship. Now, they can be friends.
Gretchen walks away at the end of My Best Friend’s Exorcism, but the best friends promise to love each other “LYLAS”–like sisters. They continue to be good friends and see each other once a year.
My Best Friend’s Exorcism is a horror comedy that pays almost perfect homage to the high school and horror movies that were popular in the 1980s. It’s not a spoof, but it’s close. It also celebrates some of the worst things about the 1980s, like big perms, Cherry Coke, and bright pink eyeshadow. The film is based on Grady Hendrix’s book about how demonic possession tests the friendships and loyalties of teenagers. It’s a lot of fun, and some of the comedy performances are great.
Abby, played by Elsie Fisher, is a plain, spotty, and self-conscious scholarship student at a fancy Catholic school. Gretchen is his best friend. She is famous, beautiful, and sometimes evil (Amiah Miller). After playing a game of Ouija board at a lakeside cabin, Abby and Gretchen dare each other to enter a spooky building in the woods. Gretchen comes out with messy hair and split lips (dead giveaways of demonic possession). Then he acts like a capital-B b*tch and makes his friends’ lives miserable (really, the point can’t be said too many times in horror movies that the teenage years can be torture without satanic intervention ).
My Best Friend’s Exorcism is a horror-comedy, but it’s not just a bad copy of the 80s because of the script’s clever use of 80s references. The joke in the scariest scene was about a diet pill urban legend in the 1980s, which I immediately remembered. And Abby hires a funny celebrity Christian bodybuilder named Christian Lemon (Christopher Lowell) to perform an exorcism on Gretchen. Director Damon Thomas worked on the Killing Eve episodes, and he enjoys these scenes, as the mullet-wearing, muscle-cropped t-shirt Christian proves he’s not qualified for the job ( “This is not your average. throw up and scold”).
The movie My Best Friend’s Exorcism could use a real scare or two. But it will bring back fond memories for anyone old enough to remember Tiffany and advice columns in magazines for teenage girls.

Grady Hendrix’s Quirk Books novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism has been made into a movie by Damon Thomas. This is a young adult horror movie that leans more toward “young adult” than “theological horror.” With the word “exorcism” in the title, all the subgenres expected of vomiting and other signs of possession are present, but only as an introduction. Nothing really scares like The Exorcist. Instead, teleplay writer Jenna Lamia focused on 1980s references that make being friends with the devil less scary. My Best Friend’s Exorcism pulls its punches and uses a lot of digital effects, even people throwing up, but it still has an easy-to-follow plot and gives teenage girls a lead in a field once dominated by men.
