How did Myra Hindley and Ian Brady meet?

In her book Myra Hindley: Inside the Mind of a Murderess, published by Jean Ritchie in 1988, Hindley is portrayed as having been raised in a strict and destitute household by her father, who routinely beat her and taught her violence apply to solve problems.

In 1961, when Hindley was only 18 and working as a typewriter, their paths crossed for the first time with Ian Brady. Although aware that Brady had a history of burglaries, she became intrigued by him.

The two went to see a film about the Nuremberg trials for their first date because Brady wanted to impress her. Brady found the German soldiers quite interesting. He often read criminal biographies, and after dating, the two would take turns reading aloud from a book about atrocities against humanity during their lunch breaks.

To get closer to the Aryan ideal, Myra Hindley then altered her appearance by dying her hair blonde and wearing dark red lipstick. Afterward, the two discussed the possibility of committing crimes together and fantasized about robberies that would net them enormous sums of money.

On October 7, the two were taken into custody by the police. Both initially declared that they were innocent of the crime. However, after receiving a tip from Smith, Hindley’s brother-in-law, authorities discovered luggage at a train station containing pictures and an audio recording of Downey being abused. The discovery of this baggage led to the arrest of Downey’s perpetrators.

During the course of the search conducted at Myra Hindley’s home, investigators came across a notebook with the name ‘John Kilbride’ written on the pages.

A search of the area was conducted following the discovery of photos of the couple on Saddleworth Moor. Myra Hindley and Ian Brady were both arrested and charged with triple murder after the bodies of Downey and Kilbride were discovered by police.

Following his conviction, Brady was transferred to HM Prison Durham, where he requested to be held in solitary confinement. The inquest concluded that Brady’s death was due to natural causes and that his hunger strike had in no way contributed to it. Brady died of restrictive pulmonary disease on May 15, 2017 at Ashworth Hospital after receiving end-of-life treatment.

Although Brady had frequently withheld food and water for more than 48 hours, the investigation found his body mass index was not a cause for concern. This was noted in the report of Brady’s death. As a direct result, a feeding tube was inserted into Brady’s stomach.
