Olivia Munn Reveals She Had a Full Hysterectomy While Fighting Breast Cancer: ‘It’s the Best Decision for Me’
Olivia Munn revealed that she had a full hysterectomy in April as she battled breast cancer.
I’m talking to Vogue in a profile published on Sunday, she said: “I had an oophorectomy and hysterectomy. I removed the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.
She called the life-changing decision “the best” for her because her doctor suggested she stop producing estrogen – which feeds and grows luminal B breast cancer – to prevent the cancer from returning.
“It was a big decision, but it was the best decision for me because I had to be present for my family,” the 43-year-old said.
“I had friends who tried to console me, saying, ‘Malcolm won’t remember this. Don’t worry.’ But I kept thinking to myself, “I’m going to remember that I missed all this stuff.” “It’s his childhood, but it’s my motherhood and I don’t want to miss any of these moments if I don’t have to.”
This would mark the actress’ fifth surgery in her cancer-fighting journey, having previously undergone a full double mastectomy, lymph node dissection, reconstructive surgery and nipple delay.
Before her hysterectomy, the mother of one – who welcomed son Malcolm with John Mulaney in November 2021 – had previously taken Lupron to suppress estrogen in her body.
However, the drug’s side effects kept her bedridden, as she explained: “It was next-level debilitating exhaustion.”
She continued: “I would wake up in the morning and have to go back to bed almost immediately. If you ask Malcolm, “Where does dad work?” He ran to his desk and if asked, “Where does mom work?” He was pointing at my bed. It was so sweet. But at the same time, it broke my heart because that’s his image of me.”
In the interview, Munn also revealed that this was the third time she had frozen her eggs. She’s done it before, at 33 and 39 years old.
“After my diagnosis, we decided to try another round of egg retrieval and hoped it would be a good month,” she said.

“John and I have talked about it a lot and we don’t feel like we’re done growing our family, but we didn’t know if I would need chemotherapy or radiation.”
In March, Munn announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had undergone a double mastectomy.
Despite testing negative for the BRCA gene and obtaining a clear mammogram, her doctor calculated her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score of 37%.
After an MRI scan, she was diagnosed with luminal B carcinoma in both breasts, which is an “aggressive, fast-moving tumor.”
Throughout her journey, Munn has been vocal about her gratitude to her family, friends and 41-year-old Mulaney.
The couple has been together for three years, and their red carpet debut took place in January.
