Pink paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Olivia Newton-John at the 2022 American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
The “So What” singer took the stage at the Microsoft Theater to perform “Hopelessly Devoted to You” in honor of icon “Grease”, who died of breast cancer aged 73 in August.
Before her performance he told Entertainment Tonight“She was an absolute icon and she was also a wonderful human being. I loved her voice. My daughter just finished playing Grease in her theater production and it actually helped me learn the song.”
Throughout her career, Newton-John has won 10 AMAs and hosted the ceremony in 1976 with Glen Campbell and Aretha Franklin.
The singer “Physical” was “surrounded by family and friends” when she lost a 30-year battle with cancer on her Southern California ranch.
The British-born Australian actress was first diagnosed with cancer in 1992.
After going into remission, she was re-diagnosed in 2013 and 2017.
The disease later progressed to stage 4, and she credits medical marijuana for helping her manage her pain.
“Olivia, our love for one another is beyond our understanding,” says her husband, John Easterling wrote on Instagram after her death.
“Every day we expressed our gratitude for this love that could be so deep, so real, so natural. We never had to “work” on it, he continued.
“We were delighted with this great mystery and accepted the experience of our love as past, present and eternal. Even now as her soul soars, the pain and holes in my heart are healed by the joy of her love and the light that shines forth.”
This year’s AMA show commemorates the 50th anniversary of the annual ceremony.
Earlier on the show, Pink performed her new single “Never Gonna Not Dance Again” on roller skates. Stevie Wonder, Charlie Puth and Ari Lennox paid tribute to 2022 AMAs Icon Award winner Lionel Richie.
The 2022 American Music Awards, hosted by Wayne Brady, is broadcast live on ABC and tomorrow on Hulu.
