On September 14, the singer (b Robert Kelly) was found guilty of six counts of sexual assault and not guilty of seven counts, pursuant to NBC News.
Kelly faced a total of 13 charges pending sentencing: four counts of manufacturing child pornography, one count of conspiracy to obtain child pornography, two counts of obtaining child pornography, five counts of soliciting a minor for sex, and one count of in conspiracy to defraud. Jurors found him guilty of three counts of child sexual exploitation related to the production of child pornography. However, he was found not guilty of attempting to obstruct the preliminary investigation.
After the verdict, Kelly’s attorney told reporters that the case had been overcharged. She said his team didn’t quite celebrate the win, but she’s thankful the jury considered every count. She said she begged the jury to remember that he was a man with a difficult childhood.
During the four-week trial, prosecutors argued that Kelly obstructed the law by falsifying his previous child pornography case, which ultimately resulted in his acquittal in 2008. The latest legal battle featured testimony from four women who accused the R&B artist of sexually abusing them when they were children, including one who identified herself as the person in the video at the center of Kelly’s past trial.
