For three years, Schaller’s love parade went without a hitch. However, in 2010, he was punished for a stampede at the Duisburg Love Parade, which left 21 dead and 652 injured. Schaller testified as a witness in court proceedings in the accident in 2018, admitting moral responsibility but not being charged.

Schaller, his partner, Christine Shikorski, and their children were aboard the Piaggio P.180 Avanti when it disappeared on October 21, 2022, while en route from Palenque, Mexico to Limón, Costa Rica. Although wreckage was discovered 28–33 km (about 17–20 mi) from Limon the following day, the fate of the plane or its passengers was still unknown, according to Costa Rican authorities.
