We can answer your question about who shot Howard. spoilers to follow.

Who Killed Howard?

It’s been three months since filming the start of season two, and Howard has spent the entire time in the hospital recovering from his wounds. He claims to have amnesia and has no memory of who was shot or why. However, his behavior in the first episode suggests otherwise. While Howard’s memory loss is unexpected, one of his doctors tells Shannon Burke that it’s not entirely unexpected. He says the brain is a mysterious, fascinating device that buries painful memories and suppresses trauma. In fact, he claims that what happened to Howard was as miraculous as it gets.

Howard’s cancer diagnosis was revealed in Season 1. Howard has reportedly had a bone marrow transplant in the past three months and his cancer is currently in remission. Although Howard claims he doesn’t remember what happened to him, his behavior after he was released from the hospital suggests otherwise.

The highlight of the first season was Howard being shot by Kanan. Raquel, his mother, made sure Unique, her fiercest opponent, was held accountable. While Kanan was being sent to Virginia Beach by Raquel, Unique was arrested. She invites him to New York City in the season two debut after learning that Howard suffers from amnesia. Unique has since been released from police custody as numerous eyewitnesses have identified him as being at a different location from where Howard was shot at the time of the incident. We see Howard watching Kanan from his car, despite his denial. Apparently he remembers something.

How was Howard shot?

On his mother’s advice, Kanan shot Howard; he was unaware that the man was actually his biological father. Howard and Raq seemed to have reached an agreement in episode 9 “Loyal to the End”. Kanan would be given to Howard as a donor after she informed him that he was his biological father. In return, Unique and his crew would encounter difficulties conducting business, and Howard would guarantee that siblings Thomas and Kanan would be treated sympathetically by the police.

As we later learn, Raq had no intention of honoring her end of the bargain. In fact, she appears to have sent her son to kill Howard so she would let him know how bitter she was with him when he died. It makes sense why Kanan evolves the way he does in the show’s first season. Everything he knows he learned from his mother.
