Review of the film Jogi: Historical tearjerkers highlighting the 1984 tragedy in India

The historical drama “Jogi” is extremely harrowing because it depicts the tragedy of the 1984 Delhi riots. These riots were a disaster that cannot and should not be forgotten. Besides other performers, the film has Diljit Dosanjh, Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub, Hiten Tejwani and Kumud Mishra as the main actors. Ali Abbas Zafar is the director of the film.

The anti-Sikh riots that took place in 1984 after the death of Indira Gandhi at the hands of her Sikh bodyguards serve as the main plot point of the film Jogi. Over the course of these three days, the film follows a group of people as they desperately try to flee the city and find safety in Punjab. The film immerses you in their agony.

The following is what the synopsis of the film reads on Netflix:

IN THE 1980S IN NEW DELHI, THREE FRIENDS MAKE HEART-ROYING SACRIFICES AND TAKE TERRIFIC RISKS TO SAVE THEIR CIVILIAN MEMBERS FROM DANGER. FILMFARE AWARD-WINNING ACTOR AND SINGER DIJIT DOSANJH DIVES IN THIS TOUCHING THRILLER.

A normal Sikh family starts their day in a somewhat unusual way, as they look forward to celebrating two occasions at the beginning of the film and setting the stage for the traditional calm-before-the-storm tone that sets the stage for the Film prepares rest of film. What they don’t know, however, is that a violent storm has already entered their lives. You are not aware of this fact.

Jogi (Diljit Dosanjh), whose job it is to protect his family and people from the chaos that surrounds them, is forced to do so when news of Indira Gandhi’s assassination spreads and some political leaders make their way to the city to wreak havoc there. And with the support of his friends, this endeavor doesn’t seem impossible.

The first ten minutes of the film is enough to hold your attention and convince you that you made a solid choice in picking a film, as you won’t be dozing off in the middle. The historic tragedy that has been remembered by the community for as long as anyone can remember should also be remembered by the people of this country.

It was a difficult time and watching the events on TV makes you realize how much violence people have witnessed over those three days. Even though we’ve read about the events in our history books, it doesn’t have the same effect on us until we actually go there and witness them.

In this film, Diljit Dosanjh gives a solid performance while Kumud Mishra, who portrays the villain, does an excellent job. I also have to give credit to Kumud Mishra for his excellent portrayal of the antagonist. During his sequences I was very aware that my frustration was growing to boiling point.

The suspense is maintained throughout the film, and with the addition of the protagonist’s heartbreaking love story (because Bollywood just can’t get past that), the film is both an entertaining and insightful experience.

Even though it’s done in a very Bollywood manner, it’s very well done and the cast also did an excellent job of conveying the chaotic times and desperation of the people. The director did a great job capturing both of these aspects of the historical period. And although the last comment tells us that the concept of the film was quite different, the film mainly focuses on the massacre of the Sikhs.

Conclusion: Yogi

The movie will bring tears to your eyes and you won’t be able to help but feel your chest heavy from the range of emotions you experience while watching. And as if that wasn’t enough, the fact that it’s based on real events will only add to the feelings you already have.

While the film could do a better job of elaborating on the historical tragedy, at the end of the day it’s just another film that tries to overshadow such events with themes of friendship and things like that.

Overall, this is a good movie to watch online if you’re interested in learning about our country’s dark past, but also interested in minimizing its impact on your life as much as possible.

Jogi is available to watch on Netflix.
