Robert Ralph Minkoff was born on August 11, 1962 in Palo Alto, California to a Jewish family to Jack Robert Minkoff and Tola Faye Minkoff. Minkoff has been fascinated by cartoons and animation since childhood.
He attended Palo Alto High School and graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in the character animation program in the early 1980s. Minkoff later met Chuck Jones while in school and considered him an inspiration.

Minkoff began his career with Walt Disney in 1983. He worked on his first animated film The Black Cauldron. As a supervising animator, he worked on a mystery adventure animated film.
He was then selected as the character designer for the animated film The Brave Little Toaster. In 1989, Minkoff’s efforts were rewarded with the release of another film, The Little Mermaid. In 1990, he directed another film called Beauty and the Beast which was a big success.
Minkoff got his big break in 1994 after directing the popular film The Lion King. Stuart Little followed a few years later. In 2002, the film’s sequel, Stuart Little 2, was released.

Then in 201⁰ Minkoff was approached with the idea for Blazing Samurai by writer Ed Stone, who originally envisioned an all-human character. However, Minkoff proposed an all-animal cast, and in 2014 he was attached as a producer. After the death of original filmmaker Chris Bailey, the film was renamed Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank and released in theaters in 2022.
