Political career
Samy Vellus political career began when he and Govindaraj joined Batu Caves MIC branch in 1959 at the age of 23. After five years he became party leader and a member of the Selangor MIC Committee. He attracted a lot of attention when he climbed the flagpole of the Indonesian embassy, took down the flag and lit it. He was found guilty in court and fined RM2. He was called Hero Malaysia on the front pages.
He served as MP for Sungai Siput for eight terms from September 1974 to March 2008. From 1978 to 1979 he was Deputy Minister for Local Government and Housing. He then served as Minister of Labor from 1979 to 1989. From 1989 to 1995 he was Minister for Energy, Telecommunications and Post. From 1995 to March 2008 he was Secretary of Labor. In March 2008 he lost his seat in Parliament to Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj of the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM), but ran again in March 2008 as a candidate for the People’s Justice Party (PKR).
During his tenure, he was the second longest serving minister after Rafidah Aziz.
As of January 1, 2011, Samy Vellu is Malaysia’s Special Envoy for Infrastructure in India and South Asia. He has the rank of Minister. In 2018, the new Pakatan Harapan (PH) government left office.
Personal life
Vellu was born in Kluang, Johor and hails from India. With his wife Indrani Samy Vellu he had a son. He was a Chartered Architect and a member of both the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Malaysian Institute of Architects.
