The recording of Maya Rudolph’s conversation with David Letterman in 2009 reoccurred amid her revelation that she felt “ashamed and humiliated” by him.
In the clip from her first appearance on “Late Show with David Letterman,” the 50-year-old comedian received an apology from a 75-year-old talk show host who misspelled her name before taking the stage.
“Thank you, Dave,” she said, placing her hand on his visitor’s chair.
Rudolph recalled the misfortune in an interview with WSJ. magazineposted on Friday.
“I wasn’t having a good time,” recalled the star of “Bridesmaid”.
“He pronounced my name wrong and I just sat there like I had fallen in love with you all my life.” And now my heart is broken. And I sit here ashamed and humiliated.
Rudolph admitted that she “did not know how to deal” with the situation at the time.
“I didn’t know how to come up with something funny to say,” she confessed. “My public image wasn’t strong yet.”
However, since then it has been “Definitely she has gotten much better “in public speaking, she said, adding,” when i feel uncomfortable, i try to be funny. “
The Letterman representative did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
Elsewhere in the interview, Rudolph explained why he doesn’t see himself as a celebrity – despite his many years of career in the spotlight.
“I know I’m a working actor and people know who I am, but I don’t feel like a star because that word means something different to me today,” an actress who rose to fame after joining Saturday Night Live in 1999, shared.
“There are many different types of celebrities these days and a lot of self-styled celebrities that people are known to be famous for, and that’s not what I do.”
The Away We Go star – who shares 17-year-old Pearl, 12-year-old Lucille, 11-year-old Jack and 9-year-old Minnie with partner Paul Thomas Anderson – added that family is a priority these days.
“Believe me, I am not Pollyanna who is like, I smile all day, every day. I’m stressed, I’m pissed off, but I’ve learned that I can make a choice myself, and it’s liberating, ”she said.
“Maybe people who have worked as long as I have made different choices and have nicer cars. I don’t know, but it’s very important to me [try to] have that balance. “
