QUEENS, NEW YORK: In recent months, the city council’s transportation chair has been speeded up to three times despite her commitment to “do it better.” Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers (D-Queens) vowed to abide by the rules in April after a local news site spotted her with 17 speeding tickets in just 11 months. After being called for speeding, Brooks-Powers 39 reportedly responded, “I absolutely swear to do better.”

Despite her vows, however, city cameras caught her on April 24, June 23, and July 22 exceeding the legal speed limit. Streetsblog revealed that two of the councilwoman’s speeding fines were issued on days when she was touring the city and speaking about public transit with her colleagues. Nearly all traffic offenses involving Brooks-Powers have occurred in Queens, where as of July 31 of this year up to 27 people died in auto accidents.

Brooks-Power’s driving record qualifies them for the Dangerous Vehicle Response Program. Under the initiative, the city can impound cars with 15 or more speed camera penalties within 12 months until the registered owner completes a safe driving course. However, it is unknown if she was accepted into the program.

Several lawmakers in the US have recently been implicated in traffic offenses. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s motorcade was arrested for repeated speeding and traffic complaints, but none of the fines totaling $658 were paid. The congressman has pushed for tougher fines for drivers found speeding. Since February 2020, Lightfoot’s SUVs have been involved in at least eight incidents. Footage collected and uncovered by CWB Chicago shows several incidents involving their cars. A video shows two Ford Expedition SUVs speeding past a red light. Traffic cameras flash in their wake. Another video shows a black Chevy SUV turning left at a red signal at a major intersection. It is not known if Lightfoot was in the SUVs at the time of the accidents, and she apparently would not have been driving even if she had been.

New Jersey City Councilwoman Amy DeGise was recently caught on CCTV tape driving her SUV into a bicycle at a Jersey City intersection and then sped away without stopping. Amy DeGise is being urged to stop after driving into Andrew Black, 29, a cyclist, around 8am on July 19. The event took place at the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Forrest Street.

Meanwhile, the father of a five-year-old said he was afraid Wisconsin Democratic leader Janet Bewley would not be punished even though she was involved in a car accident that killed his daughter and wife. Marine Brandon Fink has criticized Bewley for not reaching out to him after the tragic crash. Bewley, 70, had undergone cataract eye surgery the day before the catastrophic accident that killed Fink’s wife Alyssa Ortman, 27, and daughter Khali, 5.
