Shakira calls Spanish tax fraud case ‘smear campaign’: report
Shakira reportedly accuses Spanish prosecutors who accused her of tax fraud launching a “smear campaign” against her.
The 45-year-old Grammy Award winner claimed authorities “violated her right to privacy” by handling matters so publicly and without presumption of innocence, according to documents obtained by TMZ on Friday.
Shakira’s legal team also reportedly provided reasons why she is not responsible for the tax bill, claiming that she was not a resident of Spain during the period in question.
Under Spanish law, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer only has to pay taxes if she spends 183 days or more in a European country in a single year.
In September, a Spanish judge sentenced Shakira stand trial for allegedly failing to pay $13.9 million in income taxes she earned between 2012 and 2014.
If found guilty, the “Voice” coach faces up to eight years in prison and a $24 million fine.
However, Shakira denies that she was a full-time resident of Spain from 2012 to 2014 and actually paid $10,141,075 in taxes to the US government, according to TMZ.
However, prosecutors reportedly claim that Judge “Voice” declared herself a Spanish tax resident in 2015.
The Colombian-born singer and Spanish football star, 35, announced her split in June after more than a decade of being together.
“We regret to confirm that we are parting ways,” reads a statement released by Shakira’s public relations firm.
“For the sake of our children, who are our top priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
After breaking up, the “Whenever, Wherever” singer is reportedly planning to move to Miami with her two children.
