Regarding the Shooting That Occurred in Kenny Wood Park

Around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, the communications manager for Kennywood, Tasha Pokrzywa, released the following statement: “The park is closed for the night and all guests have left.” An incident that occurred last night involved us with local law enforcement officers.

First and foremost, we are committed to protecting the welfare of our employees and our guests. West Mifflin and Allegheny County law enforcement officers, along with members of the park’s security team, were on the scene when the incident occurred. At 1:30 in the morning, the majority of emergency personnel and responding police had dispersed. Police reported that they let workers into the park one by one to collect their belongings, and they did so as the police continued to disperse.

As the investigation continued inside the park, Duquesne resident Valerie Franklin waited at the entrance for her 19-year-old son, Brandon. While he waited, the investigation continued. He claims that he recently started working at Kennywood for the first time. Around 11 pm on Saturday, Ms. Franklin said he was listening to his police scanner when he heard a call about someone in the park with a gun. She said, “I was scared and contacted him right away,” adding that when Brandon picked up the phone, he informed her that he heard gunshots and saw people running away.

She remarked, “I pray for the children and the people being transported.

West Mifflin resident Ward Troetschel claimed to have arrived at Kennywood for the Phantom Fall Fest at 9:45 pm He recalled seeing “so many unaccompanied youths” at the time. Also, he said he left the park at 10:30 p.m. because of the belligerent behavior of youths who were “trying to start fights.”

He said groups of at least 100 people rushed him two or three times as he left. The scene, according to Mr. Troetschel, is “a little messy.” The park closes on Sunday and reopens on Friday.

A notice on the park’s website states that anyone who buys a Fall Fest ticket for Sunday can use it on any other Fall Fest night. Police will use surveillance footage from the park, according to Supt. Kearns, to assist in their investigation.

Call the county police tip line at 833-255-8477 if you have any information on the shootings, he said.
