James and Nelson had successfully climbed the mountain to its summit which stands at an elevation of 26,781 feet and is the ninth highest peak in the world. The couple wanted to head to Manaslu last week, but heavy snowfall prevented them from doing so.

Nelson wrote in an Instagram post that she no longer felt as safe on Manaslu as she had on previous trips to the thin atmosphere of the high Himalayas. These earlier expeditions took place in more oxygenated environments.

She also mentioned that her resilience had been tested in new and different ways over the past few weeks. As a direct result of the persistent monsoon, which brings with it constant rain and high humidity, she suffers from severe homesickness. While the mountain is always shrouded in mist, it is quite an obstacle for her when she tries to find calm and inspiration there.

Additionally, Nelson worked for The North Face for over twenty years and was named 2018 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. She and Morrison scaled the 21,165 foot Paspura, often known as “The Peak of Evil” just 12 days after arriving in India.
