Review of Echo 3

Journalist and author Mark Boal made his debut as a storyteller for the general public with the publication of his novel The Hurt Locker in 2008. Although he also has story credit for the film In the Valley of Elah, which was released in 2007 because it was based on his reporting, the film, which Boal first worked on with director Kathryn Bigelow, is still considered his own best work to date. The Hurt Locker was a harrowing look at the banality and brutality of war that became almost a parable as it examined a man who embodied his country’s obsession with conflict.

While not without its flaws, The Hurt Locker was a disturbing look at the banality and brutality of war. Unfortunately, every film Boal has worked on since this one hasn’t lived up to the standard this one has set. Zero Dark Thirty’s failure in 2012 was primarily due to its tremendous distortion of reality. Detroit in 2017 was more dynamic but ultimately destructive to its detriment, and Triple Frontier in 2019 failed to fully tap into something more profound. However, she has made considerable efforts to do so.

Echo 3, Boal’s latest attempt to regain his writing’s initial acuity, sees him transition to television with hints of insight still lost as the show repeatedly loses focus. The story of a kidnapping that devours a family is told in the first five episodes of the series, which were shared with critics. During these episodes, the series writes itself into narrative corners that are difficult to dig out of. Echo 3 reimagines another TV series, the Israeli drama When Heroes Fly.

In this version, the characters no longer serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), but instead work for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Amber Chesborough, played by Jessica Ann Collins, plays a central role. In the opening sequence, we see that she was kidnapped near the Colombia-Venezuela border and is in a precarious situation. It’s up to her husband Prince (Michiel Huisman) and brother Bambi (Luke Evans), both of whom are introduced to us in a flashback, to find a way to save her. Although they all have considerable experience, they not only have to contend with the CIA having its agenda, but also with the fact that they are all aware that their recent mission has resulted in a catastrophic failure.

Luke Evans and Michiel Huisman continue their search for their missing family in the new trailer for Echo 3.

The parts of Echo 3 that hold the most potential for intrigue are the ones where Boal hints at giving a deeper look into the bigger picture of this story. The opening scene, in which the prince marries Amber, is intentionally dramatic. The event is lavish, with a fleet of expensive cars parked outside the venue, each of which will likely cost more than most people will make in a lifetime combined.

The fact that Prince and Bambi spend their days traveling to areas destabilized by deprivation and poverty while always returning home to such wealth is a painful juxtaposition to consider. The glimmers we catch from other people’s reflections are still too scattered to give us any sense of consistency.

Echo 3 skips a potentially more complicated portrayal of the Force to jump straight into the action, in which Prince and Bambi quickly eliminate anyone who tries to get in their way. At times it seems like the show is striving for more, but it never feels like it takes precedence over the action taking place. In one such scene, a character spots two of his friends who have been killed, picks up one of their guns, and is almost immediately killed by another character after using the gun.

When we don’t get to know these characters in a meaningful way, the situation is tragic, but in the end it’s predictable and cliche. They get a little more depth than a one-dimensional character, but that happens just before they’re killed or relegated to the back of the story.

Even for viewers interested only in the plot, which is often clumsily put together due to over-reliance on shaky cameras, this results in a significant portion of the show’s sequences and the aftermath of those sequences needing to be given more meaning. The breaking point is when a relatively resilient character dies and is almost completely forgotten before being addressed in even a few words in the most lackluster of ways. This not only results in the loss of a potentially fruitful setup, but also leaves very little to invest in further.

The fact that the series abruptly shifts focus and haphazardly jumps to different characters, times, and places makes the situation even worse. This results in the characters often providing portrayal in painfully stilted ways to fill both the narrative and the themes explored. Several bizarre lines about male genitalia appear out of nowhere, completely throwing off the tone of what was being played. This was an attempt at black humor, but a misguided attempt at best.

It’s not just coarse language to be expected in stressful situations; Instead, the unnatural way it’s written makes it feel out of place. Although Huisman is said to be superior to Evans and Evans is said to have a more pessimistic view of everything that happened, none of these characters feel as real as the series demands of them.
