Childhood & Early Life
Tami Roman’s birth name was Tamisha Akbar and she was born on April 17, 1970 in Mount Vernon, USA. Her mother, Nadine Buford, raised her alone. She spent her childhood in White Plains, which is located in New York City. The Puerto Rican man who left Nadine after she discovered she was pregnant at the age of 15 was Tami’s biological father. Tami was born into a family going through a difficult financial situation. With her mother having to work three jobs to make ends meet, Tami was forced to spend most of her formative years at home alone.
Tami was responsible for taking care of himself at all times. Soon after, Nadine had a romantic relationship with a man named Ali Akbar. He was a kind person who had the financial means to take care of Nadine and Tami.
As a result, things started to get better pretty quickly. Tami was first introduced to the Muslim way of life by Ali, who was a devout follower of Islam. Thanks to his efforts, Tami received the very best education available. However, Ali was a very traditionalist man, which created tensions within the family. Ali’s inflexibility has been a source of contention.
Because Ali believed that women should be obedient to men, he and Nadine had many arguments with each other. Shortly thereafter, Nadine filed for divorce and she and her daughter had to live on the streets again.
In the course of the following months, the situation worsened considerably. Most of Tami’s time in high school was spent living on the streets with her mother. Still, it was the catalyst that brought Nadine and Tami closer together and they were able to support each other emotionally during the challenging time.
Because she didn’t have the funds to buy a hat and dress, Tami was unable to attend her graduation ceremony. This was a very unfortunate turn of events. The family struggled through difficult times. Luckily, things didn’t start to improve long after Tami received her diploma and started taking on a variety of odd jobs.
While Tami was studying at Howard University, she became a member of the girl band Reality, which she joined while still a student. In addition, she seriously set about sculpting her body in a way that would allow her to become a model. At the age of 22, she auditioned for the MTV reality television series The Real World: Los Angeles and was eventually selected to participate. She’d been looking for a turning point like this and finally found one.
