Despite what the name might suggest, Tell Me Lies Episode 4 is mostly about sexual desire and the desires that come with it. Lucy stays with Stephen even though she believes he is having sexual relations with other people. Despite her best efforts, Stephen is able to use his manipulative skills to keep her from gaining the upper hand in their sexual relationship. This ultimately makes her his submissive partner.
Lucy gets far more emotionally involved than anyone should, and the fourth episode shows this so clearly that you want to yell at her and show her what she’s doing wrong. Viewers can’t prevent the strange connection from growing stronger, so all they can do is watch.
In this episode, Wrigley and Pippa’s relationship doesn’t get much screen time, and it’s not clear how they’re keeping such a big secret about Macy’s death. Bree’s inner turmoil is understandable, and the fact that she really can’t talk about it is important. As for Bree, our virgin queen, she finally got over it, but it’s easy to understand the pain she feels inside.

The fourth episode of Tell Me Lies does a good job of building the relationships and dynamics that will play out throughout the series. Still, people who have read the book must be disappointed that Lucy’s eating disorder isn’t a bigger part of the story. However, given Stephen’s behind-the-scenes work, it may soon become clear on screen.
Because our main character is closed off, it’s hard to figure out what she’s going through. One thing that needs more explanation is Lucy’s dependence on Stephen. This is another thing that needs to be made clearer. It’s getting more and more annoying that we don’t learn anything new about Lucy that Stephen and her friends don’t already know. In the long run, a voiceover could help the audience understand what’s going on so they don’t feel too far removed from the main character.
The best part of Tell Me Lies Episode 4 has to be the part of the script that talks about Bree, how she lost her virginity and how she feels about it. Typical depictions of sexuality tend to be so exaggerated that they miss the mark when it comes to making a connection. Tell Me Lies, on the other hand, with Bree’s help, is able to show the less impressive sides of virginity loss and how sex feels differently for different people.
Since the last episode ended with a cliffhanger about how Macy’s photos were accessible on Stephen’s computer, this episode should have focused more on those issues. Macy’s death seems to have been treated as a side issue in this episode, which shouldn’t have been the case given how important it is to the ending of the story. But there’s no escaping the need to whet our appetites while waiting for the all-important explanation.

In general, the fourth episode of Tell Me Lies was well written and put together. It moved away from Lucy for a while so Bree could shine, which seemed like a big deal. Also, it could be emphasized that Lucy and Stephen could be together for a long time, which would prepare viewers for something terrible and devastating. We didn’t lengthen this episode by jumping back and forth between past and present, that’s for sure. But if Evan and Bree’s conversation had touched on the wedding, it would have been a really touching moment.
