The early stuff was really something.

Back in 2002, the MTV Video Music Awards were filled with Y2K style. Who can ever forget Christina Aguilerathen in the thick of it Undressed era, wearing what could only be described as a halter scarf paired with a denim mini skirt? The “Dirrty” singer accessorized her risque ensemble with a white newsboy cap, which was all the rage at the time.

Actually, Britney Spears wore a similar hat to the same VMAs, though it was made of black leather to match her moto-inspired look. At the time, the singer had just released a cover of “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” for her film Crossingtherefore, a sharp outfit was most appropriate.

And in true 2000s fashion, Justin Timberlake hit the red carpet in a fluffy fedora from his NSYNC classmates Meanwhile, Paris Hilton reigned with a baguette bag over her shoulder and Avril Lavigne stepped out in a white tank top, camo-print cargo pants and—natch—her signature tie.
